Doha v Manama for holiday in January 2010

Dear All:

I am a UK based person, looking for a trip abroard in January 2010 for about 7 10 days. I am going with my wife. I am keen to get out of Europe and somewhere that is different. I was interested in going to a progressive Middle East country where we could relax, stay in an OK hotel for not too much, eat lots of good food, sample some culture (and by that, I don't mean going on a tent safari, but just seeing how the normal citizens live their lives), possibly do some gold/jewellery shopping and a bit of nightlife.

The two destinations I had in mind are the ones mentioned. Are these good places? Any ideas?

Your help will be much appreciated.

Hi,

Oman is really quite the nicest country in the Gulf region. Lebanon is also a very nice place to visit - lots of historical sights and culture, although it might get very cold in January.

Between Bahrain and Qatar, I'll probably choose Bahrain. Unfortunately the tourism industry here has not developed as fast as businesses have - and there are definitely lots of improvments (esp transport) that can be made before I'll personally recommend anyone to come by for a holiday.

Is Oman a lot poorer than Qatar or Bahrain?

It's probably not as rich as Qatar or perhaps even Bahrain. That said, the tourism industry in Oman is more well-developed than that here in Qatar. Getting around Doha is already a problem if you don't have a car. Public taxis are not available on demand ... and there are only a no. of taxi stands in the city. Frankly, IMHO this is not quite the place if you're thinking of a relaxing holiday. Hotels here aren't cheap either - since many cater to the business traveller rather than the leisure holiday maker.
