We are going to Doha in April for 3 nights on our way back from South Africa. Please can anyone advice which is the best location for us to stay, beach or city? and which is the best hotel to stay in, we have a 6year old, we like the beach and shopping but dont want to pay much more than £200 a night.

You could try the Sheraton, Movenpiick Towers aswell as the Inter-Continenta, which has a great pool and beach area. Also the Marriott Hotel isn't bad either.

With a 6 year old you could consider the Ramada. It's not by the beach, but in a central location and has a great pool area for kids aswell as adults.

If you can get a good deal, the Ritz or Four Seasons would be perfect (check out their online specials, or ask if your travel agent can get a good deal)

Hotels in Doha are very, very expensive.

Doha is not a very big city. You are close to both beach and city ... it's just the traffic that can take a while to get anywhere.

The beach is not like western beaches in that you can swim anywhere. You have to pretty much get a hotel on the beach if you want to swim the beaches. Or go remote, which wouldn't really suit you being there for just a couple of days and probably not having a car.

You need to spend some time online googling hotels to search for the best deal. Or even contact them direct, it doesn't hurt and you never know, the might just have a promotion on.

You might want to consider upping the budget and staying just 2 nights ... that's still plenty of time to see Doha :-)

Sheraton may fit your budget and needs. It is right in the city centre, and has it own garden and beach at the same time. Four Seasons is next to it, but may exceed your budget if they don't offer any promotion.

Ritz Calton and Mariott are far from the city centre. Mariott is actually close to the airport.

I suggested Marriott as it has a private beach area and is in close proximity to the soukes area.

Just a thought, if you have a 6 year and they want to burn off energy go to the Hyatt Plaza Shopping Mall which has an excellent kids play area, with a water log ride and small rollercoaster, all indoors. It's called Jungle Zone. And while you are over that way, pop in to Villagio Mall next door, that's worth seeing.

This was also the area the Asian Games were held in and it's worth a look.

Doha has some impressive malls and they can be quite a relief from the heat. City Centre is also another nice mall (which is located near the Sheraton, Movenpiick Towers, Four Season). It has an ice skating rink and 10 pin bowling centre in it. Deli France is a restaurant on the 3rd floor that is nice, especially with kids as they do great kids meals and not too expensive. There is also another good fun section on the 3rd floor for kids too.

Good Luck.

Lucky you .... great pool area.

If you get a chance, you should do their afternoon tea.

You are also near the Doha golf course.

You can't go wrong with this hotel :-)

Also recommed the Friday sparkling brunch @ The Ritz Carlton, if you happen to be in Doha on a Friday.

The new Grand Hyatt is due to open on 22nd March. It is beside the Ritz Carlton, so could be worth a look?
