Where to go in Oman

We are an eldely ( alive) couple and have a family in Dubai. We plan to hire a 4X4 and spend two weeks touring Oman. Would like any tips on what we should not miss and where to avoid. As we live in Spain beach holidays are not what we are looking for. Village, desert, ruins etc are more our thing. Hotels seem few and far between once ot of any towns- any tips on out ofthe way places to stay?? Sory too many ? Regards Ann and Eric

We are not experts on Oman, but here are some thoughts for you. You might need your atlas nearby.

Here are some photos of Oman and I think they will give you an idea that there is a lot of the kind of thing you want to see, all over the place:

Let's start at the top of Oman in Musandam.

Here a brief (bit out of date) description:

As it says it's separated from the rest of Oman by the UAE, bizarre! The link above talks of fjords and that really is how it is as you can see from the photos.

The above trip (we think) is easier done whilst staying in Dubai. You just drive up to RAK and over the border.

See recent post "rak, oman border" for the procedure on crossing the border. The amounts of money mentioned would be different for you as I think they must be Dubai residents. Your fee will likely be 6dhs each, so no a big deal anyway. Maybe spend a 2 / 3 nights at the Golden Tulip.

Muscat is a lovely city. No high rise blocks, we think the highest building is some 12 stories and there's only a very few of that height, we would like to say only one, but we'd be guessing. See more photos:

Where it says pages 1 2 3 4 5 6 ALL, just click on ALL.

You will see that there are photos for other places as well

which you may want to look at when planning your trip.

There is a lot to do in and around Muscat.

See a post from Nov 30 entitled "things to do in Muscat".

There also a lot more that isn't there.

You'll see Nizwa mentioned, that's certainly worth a day trip.

Somewhere else you think of is a trip to Salalah (down in the south near to Yemen), it's a 1,000kms drive further on from Muscat and is even less commercial than Muscat.

It's surrounded by mountains and the climate at certain times of year can be very different to Muscat. We've only been there once and that was 2 days only and we were on a mission so we didn't have a lot of time to look around. Hotels there are a bit sparse and as you say once you get out of Muscat there aren't that many.

Hopefully TA members such as kumash and vertical (and others) will see your request and come up with their thoughts.

Most of all the Omanis are lovely people and they are very proud of their heritage, as they should be.
