Volunteering in Lebanon Refugee Camps

I am an American 61 year old woman coming to either Tyre or Beirut in July of 2013. What type of clothing is required? Are there clothing restrictions for women? Thank you

- Lebanese people are socially conservative. Except at the beach resorts visitors should dress modestly hats and shorts are considered offensive in churches. When visiting a mosque, it is important to remove shoes before entering and to be dressed modestly.

I came across your message trying to find agencies with which to volunteer; could you possibly email me as well regarding what you will be doing and how you were able to come across the opportunity to do so?

Thanks so much!

Uzma,

I have been trying for the past week to get ANY information about how to volunteer in the refugee camps and i cannot find anything!! The agencies wont tell you anything unless you go through and complete a formal application to become a volunteer for something they are looking for specifically.

With the ridiculous overcrowding now taking place with refugee camps at 400-500% of capacity, I cannot believe the UN has not implemented anything for people who do want to give a few weeks of their time to help in any way they can.

The best i can figure is i will fly to Beirut, get a car, and drive out there. Keep you eyes and ears peeled and maybe you will make a contact with a journalist or UN rep or vollunteer that you can get an escort with.

Bring things for the kids, bon-bons, toys, books...

There are strong travel advisories against Lebanon and especially border towns of Lebanon where many of the camps are located and now taking shelling spilling over from the fighting in Syria. So your government embassy will tell you nothing, except DON'T GO unless you absolutely have to....

Good luck and if anyone else wants to network, I will be in Lebanon next week.
