Crossing from Israel into Jordan at Sheik Hussein

Travelling to Egypt,Israel and Jordan in September and am unsure how we cross from Israel into Jordan? We will have a hire car in Israel but cannot take that across, but hoping also to hire a car in Jordan to go to Petra etc. We were planning to cross at Sheik Hussein crossing, I guess we get a taxi there? How do we then get to Amman or hire a car? I would be interested to know the costs involved in getting across the border as well.

With most hire car companies you can arrange for them to have the car ready for you at your point of arrival. An additional cost for this is added.

Yu have 2 options Sheikh Hussain or Aqaba (Arava).

As for border cost you will have Israeli exit tax

maybe around 94 Shekel (not sure) and the usual visa cost when entering Jordan which is around 10JD

Sheikh Hussain is quite far from the nearest big Town or city which would be Irbid - from where most people either catch the bus if you arrive at the right time or else take a taxi (if there is one) - transport from here isnt very good. If the car rental company agrees to bring the car to SH crossing then no probs.

Arava crossing might be easier - leave the car in Eilat or else at the border. Regular shuttle buses to the border from Eilat bus station. Cross the border and you will find taxis waiting to take you to Aqaba town centre - cost around 7JD.

Takes 5 minutes. You can also negotiate with the taxi driver to take you to Petra - cost around 50JD. Otherwise the rent car can be picked up in Aqaba or at the border by agreement and for a small extra charge.

Thanks for the great advice! Is there Open and closing hours on the Arava border crossing?
