Exchanging currency to NIS

Hello. We have US Dollars and EUROs. Is it best to change CURRENCY into NIS ? or use an ATM card? We will need to pay a taxi when we land---should we get alot of NIS at airport or only what we need for taxi?

Take a look at the top questions on the right hand side of the main Israel page - there is one called Currency exchange and ATM - there is a lot of information there to answer your questions.

The easiest, fastest way to change currency is using an ATM/debit card (just make sure to let your bank know you will be in Israel).

If you are going to withdraw money from the ATM then it doesn't matter if you do it at the airport or in the city. If you are changing cash, then the airport always pays slightly less. In terms of deciding whether to carry and change cash or to use your ATM card--that depends upon the amount of fees your card assesses. If you can get a no fee card--then you will probably get a better rate just withdrawing money from the ATM.

As others have posted, ATM's are the way to go to get NIS. No need to carry any cash USD or EUROS. In fact it is probably harder and/or time consuming and less economic to try to change those to NIS as it is to just withdraw NIS via an ATM. As Oreets posted, just make sure you let your bank know ahead of time when you will be in Israel, thats what I did.

I withdrew NIS at the airport, Tiberias, and Jerusalem. No problems.

happy trails
