Do the private taxis at the airport accept credit cards?

No! Get money at the airport via the ATM machines that are easily available. ( there are also money changers, but their rate is not as usually as good as in the city)

You need cash for taxis, public transit, also for many smaller vendors - such as buying a soft drink, etc.

You can use foreign currency to pay for taxis if you haven't any shekels yet.

While Chana is correct in that you can(maybe) use foreign currency -a driver is NOT required to accept it and not all necessarily will. Also, they will give you whatever rate they feel like giving. Inasmuch as they will be required to make a special stop somewhere to change it(not with you in the car, but during their own time)-the rate they give will most likely be a lot worse than anything you can get in the money-changing bank at the airport!

You may use a credit card for light rail/bus tickets. We did that as the machine wouldn't accept anything larger that NIS20 and we only had NIS50. Really best to have shekels for taxi and small purchases! Airport ATM is great to use...especially with some friendly airport employees assisting! :)

To clarify what was said above. The ONLY place you are going to find the light rail is in Jerusalem. Tickets can be bought on either the light rail or bus--depending upon which you are using first. Buses will change large bills. --even up to 200NIS. If the driver doesn't have change ( they usually do) he'll give you what he has and ask you to wait until he collects more fares and thus, more small money.

Thanks for that clarification! Sometimes details we take for granted are so important to the reader! The light rail is fun to use but yes, ONLY in Jerusalem!
