How many days in Israel/Jordan

We have 8 full days to visit Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Eliat, & Petra.

Thursday – Fly into Tel Aviv (TLV), overnight in Jerusalem.

Friday – Jerusalem

Saturday – Jerusalem

Sunday – Petra

Monday – Petra

Tuesday – Eliat

Wednesday – Tel Aviv

Thursday – Tel Aviv

Friday – Fly back to US

Does this itinerary sound rushed. We would like to take in the sites at a leisurely pace as well as take a dip in the dead sea.

Have you considered the logistics of your trip to Petra ? i.e. how you will get from the centre of the country to Eilat (and back) and how long it takes?

With 8 days you are spending 3 of them around Petra and Eilat. It seems as you are totally cheating yourself out of really seeing Israel. Masada is a one day trip from Jerusalem. That leaves you with 1 full day in Jerusalem and that is not enough to even scratch the surface. The itinerary as you wrote it is not rushed, it is also empty of real meaning.

Just be aware that it will take you the better part of a day to get to Petra from Jerusalem and a good part of a day to get from Eilat to Tel Aviv. Have you thought about how you will be traveling from place to place?

I urge you to reconsider your itinerary. It truly doesn't make sense.

Jerusalem alone requires at the very least three to four full days of touring.

And aren't you interested in visitng Masada, the most visited national park in all of Israel? That would require a full day tour in and of itself, along with the Dead Sea bathing experience.

A single day of touring in Tel Aviv could suffice.

But what about the Mediterranean coast north of Tel Aviv? And what about Galilee and the Golan Heights? You are truly missing so much by not visiting these areas while in Israel.

With such a short time in country, I'd suggest skipping Eilat and Petra entirely for this visit.

Eight full days is not a lot of time to visit sites in 2 countries.

Your itinerary could by no stretch of the imagination be considered seeing anything at a leisurely pace. The country is small, but not THAT small.

It takes about 7 hours of driving time between Jerusalem and Petra. Add in an hour or up to two for the border crossing, change of transportation and you have used up a touring day.

I have an suggestion if Petra is a must.

I would suggest flying into Israel and then flying directly to Eilat. Overnight at Eilat and spend the next day on a full day tour of Petra. There are lots of companies that do this. They pick you up from your hotel in the early morning and return you about 12 hours later. Everything is taken care of, transportation, a guide for part of the day (you don't have to stay with the group), assistance at the border, water and lunch is usually included. Return to Eilat and stay overnight.

Next morning rent a car and drive through the desert to the Dead Sea for a dip and visit Masada. From there go to Jersualem. Return the rental car.

Overnight in Jerusalem. 3 days in Jerusalem followed by 2 days in Tel Aviv. One of those days in Tel Aviv you could take a coastal tour and visit Ceasarea, Bahai Gardens in Haifa and Akko.

This would be a better use of your time, would break up your days and give you time to see the places you want to see and more leisure time so you have time to see things in both Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

So now your itinerary would look like this:

Thursday- Fly into Israel, connect to Eilat. Overnight in Eilat.

Friday- Petra, overnight in Eilat

Saturday- drive north, Dead Sea dip, Masada, arrive Jerusalem in the evening

Sunday- Jerusalem

Monday- Jerusalem

Tues- Jerusalem

Wednesday- Tel Aviv

Thursday- Tel Aviv

Friday- Fly back to USA

Thank you all for your suggestions.

I have just scratched the surface reading about the sites in both countries. From the limited information I have learned is that we definitely must see Jerusalem & Petra . Also, combining Masada with the Dead Sea sounds like a good idea.

We are spending 7 days in Vienna & Prague before flying down to the middle east. We have not booked this flight yet and we have the option to flying into TLV or Amman, but not Eilat since we are using miles.

We would like to spend more time in and around Petra, at least 2 full days. Will the itinerary be more doable if we have one extra day to start in Eilat.

Wedensday- Fly into TLV in afternoon, drive to Eilat

Thursday- drive to Petra, stay near Petra

Friday- Petra

Saturday- drive to Jerusalem, visit Dead Sea, Masada

Sunday- Jerusalem

Monday- Jerusalem

Tues- drive to Tel Aviv

Wednesday- Tel Aviv

Thursday- Tel Aviv northern coast tour

Friday- Fly back to USA

Or we can fly into Amman and spend the next couple of days visiting Petra

Thursday- arrive in Amman in afternoon, stay near Petra

Friday- Petra

Saturday- Petra

Sunday- drive to Jerusalem

Monday- Jerusalem

Tues- drive to Tel Aviv

Wednesday- Tel Aviv

Thursday- Tel Aviv northern coast tour

Friday- Fly back to USA

The last option posted above has us flying into Jordan first and have only 1 border crossing into Israel. I meant to write Tues- Jerusalem

Thursday- arrive in Amman in afternoon, stay near Petra

Friday- Petra

Saturday- Petra

Sunday- drive to Jerusalem, visit dead sea, Masada

Monday- Jerusalem

Tues- Jerusalem

Wednesday- drive to Tel Aviv in morning

Thursday- Tel Aviv northern coast tour

Friday- Fly back to USA

If you fly into Amman and stay near Petra, (a few hour drive away) that is a good option. However, you can't directly drive from Jordan into Israel at Eilat. You could get a taxi to take you to from Petra to the border and then on the Israeli side, another taxi to take you to the car rental agency in Eilat. Regarding Petra, do you really need to spend two days here on such a short visit? You give Jerusalem two days and it is a living city with hundreds of things to see and do. Petra is a magnificent site but a full one day tour, especially if you are starting first thing in the morning, will really give you a great overview of the site. It is ruins and caves-albiet fascinating history, but people don't live there. I really think you will regret having only 2 days in Jerusalem which you also consider a highlight. You will only have 5 days in Israel which is hardly enough to scratch the surface but hopefully you will be able to return.

Food for thought.

I agree with anmejoshme. I think your first mistake is to place Jerusalem and Petra on the same level. No matter how fantastic Petra is, it does not compare to the complexity and marvels of the living and breathing city of Jerusalem.

Your visit to Israel as a whole will be so short. You're skipping Galilee entirely. Ah, what a near tragedy.

If you feel you must visit Petra on this trip, then I suggest making it a SINGLE day tour excursion from Eilat via Desert Eco Tours. But don't waste previous time driving to Eilat (that's a full day wasted day right there in each direction). Fly back and forth to Eilat from central Israel. You have flight options from both Tel Aviv's S'de Dov Airport and Ben-Gurion Airport.

Consider an itinerary that looks something like this:

Day 1: Arrive Tel Aviv. Depending upon arrival time, either spend half day touring the city today or tomorrow - o/n Tel Aviv

Day 2: Tel Aviv city tour - o/n Tel Aviv

Day 3: Casearea - Akko - o/n Galilee

Day 4: Sea of Galilee touring. In late afternoon drive to Jersualem. - o/n Jerusalem

Day 5: Mt of Olives & Via Dolorosa - o/n Jerusalem

Day 6: Mt Zion - Jewish Qtr - Western Wall - Davidson Center - o/n Jerusalem

Day 7: Masada and the Dead Sea - o/n Jerusalem

Day 8: Yad Vashem & Israel Museum. Fly to Eilat from Ben Gurion Airport in evening. o/n Eilat

Day 9: Single day excursion to Petra. Fly to Tel Aviv's S'de Dov in evening. o/n Tel Aviv

Day 10: Depart
