Day trip to Masada/Dead Sea - by rental car or bus?

Hi everyone,

We plan to do a day trip from Jerusalem to Masada/Dead Sea a few weeks from now (early June). We don't want to do a bus tour. Would you recommend a one-day car rental to do this trip - or do it by public bus? I'd rather not waste time sitting on buses and waiting around at bus stops, but perhaps it's worth the savings.

Can someone tell me how long the bus ride is between Jerusalem and the Dead Sea area? And how frequently the buses run (I'm assuming we'd take one bus to Masada, one to Ein Gedi, and then one back to Jerusalem)? Are they direct or do they make many stops (and thus make the trip much longer than it would take by car)?

And, if anyone can give me advice/recommendations/costs on a one-day car rental in Jerusalem, that would be wonderful too!

Thanks in advance!

For bus information see www.egged.co.il. Remember buses on Fridays stop early and no buses on Saturdays. The comfort of having your own car can't be beaten. For car rentals see www.eldan.co.il. If you did not book your hotel yet, booking Eldan Hotel + car might be economical.

Thanks! Do you know how the driving time from Jerusalem to the Dead Sea, vs. the time it would take on a bus?

Driving by car from Jerusalem to Masada should take you about an hour and a half. A bus drive is around 1 3/4 - 2 hrs.

Rent a car, for sure. You will likely want to stop at Masada, and then again somewhere for a dip in the Dead Sea, and I always recommend Qumran. That is a lot of bus coordinating.

Rent a car - that way you can also stop at scenic stops - and there are quite a few along the way.

Enjoy!

Another vote for renting a car. You will be able to stop. Dine wherever you want. See the sights around the Dead Sea (Ein Gedi etc.)

Renting the car and deducting the price for buses for at least 2 passangers might add 20-25 $ the most to your expences. For the comfort and freedom to do what you want, stop where you want is not that much.

Wow, we have a rare consensus on this forum -- a whole group of Israelis and Israel-lovers, and everyone agrees! :-)
