eilat to petra

Hi everyone,

I am going to israel during the summer and will be spending some days in Eilat. Naturally I am thinking of visiting Taba in Egypt and specially Petra.

I have seen that there are many day tours to Petra, bus since me and my friend are on a low budget we were thinking if it would be more advantageous to do the trip by ourselves rather than being accompanied by a guide.

What do you think?

Take a group tour via Desert Eco Tours. They'll pick you up in Eilat and escort you across the border to Jordan. Choose the 2-day tour to Petra and Wadi Rum.

Thank you for your help.

The problem is I have seen the price on those tours and it is a little expensive for a student´s budget.

I was thinking if it wouldn´t be better to just hire a cab and make the arrangements on my own?

First of all Petra is in Jordan and not in Egypt so you will not be going to Taba. Second a tour from Eilat involved alot of logistics. Whereas you can take a taxi from Eilat to the port for about 50 shekels, you will need to pay border taxes of about $60 each. Then to get to Aqaba take a taxi into the city of Petra and from there get a taxi to the site of Petra which I understand is about $200 each direction. The entry fees for Petra are JD90 per person. All in all this trip will cost each of you without food or drink about $300-350 for the day, whereas a one day tour with a company will provide all transportation requirements, entrance fees and most include lunch for around the same price. If you go for two days the tour's price goes down to less than $200 per day per person but then you need to pay for a hotel. If you are students on a budget, Petra is not a day tour for you.
