Tour Operator or our own way

Could anyone recommend a tour operator for the Eilat - Petra round trip (perhaps one night in Petra)? Does it work out cheaper to do it yourself ie find your own taxi on the other side of the border?

thanks

Melissa

I've used Desert Eco-tours a couple of times. Their prices are competitive and having a tour operator takes away the hassles of bargaining. Tours usually include pick up from your hotel in Eilat, escort to the border, assistance with border crossing (sometimes this speeds things up), transportation and a guide in Jordan, entrance to Petra- expensive- and usually a lunch. Overnights are even more reasonable in price and will include hotel and touring Wadi Rum or a second day in Petra.

When going to Petra overnight it is more economical price wise and time wise to use a tour operator who will make all necessary arrangements and stand behind their service.

I have used Ahalan Olympus and Thru-us with great satisfaction in all instances.

I'd also highly recommend Desert Eco Tours - they are an extremely professional outfit and have decades-worth of knowledge and experience between them. They also hire local Jordanian guides. They offer one and two-day trips to Petra www.desertecotours.com. I visited Petra on my own years ago and while it was do-able, the taxi was uncomfortable, you have very little bargaining power once on the Jordanian side of the border (few taxis wait around) and it would have been all-round easier to have gone with a trip (especially for one day). I've had fantastic responses from people who have used Desert Eco Tours and have met with with the owner Erez who is a wealth of knowledge about Petra and the deserts.

I had guests last year who did the two-day Desert Eco Petra tour and they were very satisfied.

You might also want to have a look at the Petra/Wadi Musa forum, for example this thread: tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g318895-i8977-k515…

I'm also debating the pros and cons of tour vs our own way for my next trip
