Jerusalem/ Cairo via cruise ships (potential troublespots?)

Given the situation in Palestine/Israel, Egypt at present what happens if it all kicks off again during or up to our cruise. Do the ships

divert or just knock off the port of call and if so how much warning do passengers get.?

We were on the 22 Aug 2011 Celebrity Silhouette that was supposed to dock in Alexandria for 2 days and Ashdod for 2 days. In March, we were notified that the itinerary was changed to substitute 2 days in Haifa for the 2 days in Alexandria. The ship was scheduled to depart Haifa after the 2nd day to sail to Ashdod beginning at 10 pm. At close to 9 pm, we were notified that the ship would remain in Haifa for an additional 2 days and would not dock in Ashdod. You can see that we had plenty of advance notice of the elimination of Alexandria, but little advance notice of the switch from Ashdod to Haifa. Your experience will depend on conditions in the countries, the cruise line, and, ultimately, the ship's captain.

The situation in israel right now is not anything that would make a ship not go to Haifa and Ashdod. The diverting that Murblelala experienced was NOT done by every ship. Again--personal decision of each cruise line.

Even if the ship docks only in Haifa you can still enough shore excursions from that city. The Celebrity Silhouette is actually the only ship that did not dock in Ashdod as scheduled during the tense period Israel was experiencing. All other ships did, so it totally depends on the the particular cruise line -- of course through consultations with the Israeli security authorities. Book the cruise, plan on visiting Israel and seeing the sites you have anticipated seeing. There are always solutions. You will not be sorry.

Thank you all so much for the prompt responses! I really appreciate it.. I realise at the end of the day it is down to the line and captain, and am sincerely hoping that apart from not wishing 'trouble' to hit these areas at all, that our first trip to

Israel will not be thwarted. This is the only area in the 'cruise world' we have not previously visited, and I would be so disappointed. Very excited about our journey and visit to Israel.... again, thank you all.

Time Travellers - I am sure that you will have a wonderful time, and enjoy it so much that you will plan a longer trip so that you can see the whole country. We are only a relatively short flight from the UK, and with EasyJet, it's not even so expensive :-)

Since your main concern seems to be missing Israel, I would point out that during the few times over these past many years that one port or the other in Israel has been closed, the other has remained open. It is most likely that if one port is closed suddenly, the ship's captain will decide to use the other port for all the scheduled days in Israel. Switching ground arrangements from one port to the other is a pretty simple matter for the most part.

Excellent news! It would appear from the comments that it is highly unlikely that we shall have to miss out on our 'glimpse' of Israel. Therefore I am not going to spend any more time wondering about it, and just look forward to our visit.

Thank you all again!!
