Advice about Izmir/Selcuk/Cesme

We will be in the Izmir region for 5 days in June/July - we fly from Istanbul and back again after 5 days. We definitely want to go to Selcuk (to visit Ephesus), but also want to spend some time at the beach. Would it be best to stay in Selcuk for 5 nights, and do trips from there (are there nice beaches that can be reached by bus/dolmus from Selcuk?). Or would it be better to stay in Selcuk for 3 nights and then for 2 days at a beach town in the Selcuk/Cesme area? (We also spend time in Istanbul and Cappadocia).

The beaches within easy reach of selcuk are quite good.

You have those to the South of Kusadasi and to the North.

You can also stay at Kusadasi which is only about 20 kilometers from Selcuk and do both beach and sightseeing from your hotel there.

You will find dolmus, bus transportation more easily to the South to Dilek National Park, Davutlar area and closer to closer beaches.

Dolmus or bus to Ozdere or Seferihisar to the North will be less frequent.

Staying at Kusadasi will give you the chance to also visit Herakleia and Karine in addition to Priene, Miletus and Didyma. You should take bathing suits and towels for Didyma for Altinkum beach and Karina (South of Dilek National Park) In fact this would be worth a car rental for a day.

In Kusadasi, the holiday villages to the North or the larger hotels are good with beaches and proximity to Selcuk, but the sea water may be warmer and the weather less breezy to the South of the city which is unfortunately much more built up than the North.

Here is a guide to Kusadasi Beaches, if you find Kusadasi too built up try Guzelcalmi which is much smaller and closer to the National Park.
