Restaurants serving alcohol

How can you tell before entering whether an establishment serves wine/beer? If it doesn't, what do most people drink with their meal?We would always have water on the table even when drinking wine but just wondered if there was something special many people like to drink when eating.

Would we have to buy bottled water or is tap water safe to drink?

Personally, I am not that bothered what I have but my husband when on holiday likes a glass of wine or a beer.

Mummygaot, Most restaurants at touristic places sell wine and beer also. If they do not, then they offer soft drinks (coke, fanta, 7-up, soda, etc), fruit juices, and ayran (yogurt mixed with water). Tap water is safe but tasteless as it is chlorinated.. At restaurants, you would mostly be drinking bottled water.

Ask the restaurant upon entry Mummy.

Most Turkish people have juice, soft drinks, tea & water with food.

So far I have not seen restaurants like lokantas serve alcoholic drinks, also not in places sandwich places, simple lunch restaurants, pide salons, and since you are possibly in Sultanahmet, the famous köfte restaurants (Tarihi Sultanahmet köftecisi Selim Usta) does not serve alcoholic drinks. İn most a la carte restaurants you cna get a glass of beer or wine.

There is wine in Havuzlu in the Grand Bazar, also lots of the workers of the Bazar eat there (a very good restaurant!). You will be surprised how much coke goes with meals. And of course Ayran, the Turkish yogurt drink

Cheers!

Thanks to all of you.We would definitely want to drink juice or water at lunchtime but a glass of wine or beer with the evening meal might be nice. We'll go with the flow and just see how it all works out.The food will be our main consideration.
