Ripped off at Sultan Mehmet cafe and restaurant

Hi guys

This is a restaurant close to Topkaki Palace entrance. They advertised 13.5 lira for a veg plate. We were three. We ordered 3 dishes and 3 500ml bottled water. The bill came to 108.50 and they were looking for tips after that !!!

Turns out that the chef asked if we want cous cous or rice. As vegetarian dish order, we said yes. Guess what.....9 lira for a fistful of cous cous.

Avoid at any rate.

I am sorry you had this experience, but it offers an opportunity to warn visitors to never agree to any food unless you know the price. Do not accept food delivered to your table that you did not order. It appears as if it is free like bread & water, but there is often a charge. There is almost always an up-charge for dishes suggested by the chef or your server. At least with a favorable exchange rate 35TL/person was not exception outrageous.

I rarely eat in Sultanahmet any more. Tricks like this in addition to high prices and poor food discourage me from patronizing restaurants in this area.

Agreed happened to us as well. Ate at ciya sofrasi in kadikoy for 37tl , wonderful cuisine. Shows the difference between touristy side and the asian side
