ATM at Ataturk Airport

We willH be arriving at midnight and have ordered a private transfer to our hotel in Taksim area. The company suggested small bills to pay the driver directly.

Where are the ATM's located at this airport? And what denomination will be dispensed from the machine since we prefer not give a large bill. We were quoted in Euros...so we will need to do the exchange calculation into TL's to pay our driver, right?

Thank YOu.

chtasfan, you can pay the driver in Euros. The ATM just before the visa desk dispenses Euros and USD besides TL. I suggest you get both Euros and TL from the machine.

The bills will be large coming from the ATM at Ataturk. If there's a concession stand open, try to buy a bottle of water. Otherwise you'll have to give the driver a large bill. The other thing you could do is buy Euros before leaving home and have the exact amount on hand. 5% tip is standard.

Also, remember that you'll need a $20 to pay for the tourist visa when you arrive. Most of us put a twenty in our passport when we get off the plane. After the visa is stamped, you'll collect your bags and walk to the airport lobby where you'll see the driver with your name on a sign waiting.

Most Private transfer companies will quote you in Turkish Lira or US as well if you ask them as it doesn't make sense to change money from $ to anything other than Turkish Lira in Turkey. If you have an iPhone download a currency exchange app which you can use in WiFi spots to check the rate and calculate in all currencies.

Unfortunately, in Istanbul in particular, hotel prices, as well as other services are priced in EURO. A lot of us use the iPhone app for currency exchange rates. In Europe, even small cafes have WiFi and is less prevalent in Turkey, unfortunately.

Have used the atms along the wall just as you exit immigration/customs. To get some smaller bills, we put in an odd amount like say 480 vs 500. As mentioned you can also pick up some Euros (ask for small denominations) at your bank prior to leaving for Istanbul.

How much should I tip the driver when using a transfer company from the Airport to Sultanhamet ? I have been quoted 10Euro for the transfer one way, but would prefer to tip in TL.

Thanks

Exactly, the visitors should go by the norms and cultural values of the host country. That is why they ask these questions.
