Cruise ship docks.

We'll be arriving Istanbul via the Norwegian Jade and would like to know which past of the city do cruise ships dock? Would this be anywhere near Sultanahmet? For those who might know, would there be taxis or drivers waiting at the docks that offer private trips/tours? If so, any tips when hiring them? Thank you.

bryantpark, welcome to Istanbul.

Cruise ships dock at Karakoy or Findikli areas. You really do not need to hire a guide because allmost all historic attractions are within walking distance of each other at Sultanahmet. You can not use a car there. Just get a good guidebook like "DK Eyewitness Istanbul Guide" or "Rick Steves Istanbul" and you should be fine.

It is best to use the tram to get to Sultanahmet. Simply board the tram at Tophane stop near the docks and get off it at Sultanahmet stop. You can also walk there in about 30-40 minutes, by crossing the Galata Bridge first. Just follow the tram track road.

good luck,

@enigma...many thanks for the prompt response. We only have about a day and a half in Istanbul arriving at 1pm on a Monday and leaving the next day, Tuesday at 8pm. Given that some attractions may be closed during any one of these days, would you have any advice on which attractions are worth seeing and how to go about this given the limited time we have in the city?

bryantpark, Have a look at the FAQ's on the right, especially "days of Closure of Sights". So that you can see what sights are closed, when. I suggest that you visit Topkapi palace and Basilica Cistern on Monday and Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque and Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar on a Tuesday. If you have time for it, take the 1.5 hour short Bosphorus cruise by Turyol company from Eminonu.

good luck,

How do I go about doing the the Bosphorus cruise by the Turyol company? I googled their site but it's in Turkish. Is it anywhere near the cruise ship port?

bryantpark, Turyol company has its own pier at the Golden Horn side of Galata Bridge at Eminonu (across from Karakoy where cruise ships dock). They also sell excellent fish sandwiches there. They have 1.5 hour short cruises for 12 TL/person, every hour, on the hour between 10.00 - 21.00.

good luck,
