Should we buy Istanbul Card or Akbil?

Merhaba,

We are two person which will use public transport in Istanbul for 3 days.

First day: Taksim-Kabatas, Kabatas-Sultanahmet, Beyasit-Eminonü, Turyol ferry, Eminonü-Kabatas & Kabatas-Taksim. (6 rides + Turyol ferry)

Second day: Taksim-Sisli, Sisli-Levent & Levent-Taksim (3 rides) + maybe nostalgic tram.

Third day: Taksim-Kabatas, Kabatas-Karakoy ferry, Karakoy-Kabatas & Kabatas-Taksim. (4 rides)

Which mean 13 rides per person (52TL for both)

Merhaba ZmajBH,

Akbil was discontinued and was replaced with Istanbulkart. So you'll have to buy one card and can use it for two people. Istanbulkart provides a head discount for each ride on any mode of public transit. So your total sum after your calculations is somewhat too much considering all the discounts you'll get. I'd suggest that you get your card and upload 45 lira on it. Whenever you may need more, it's very easy to upload some more credit by using the self-service kiosks. For more info about the public transportation in Istanbul, have a look:

Enjoy the city

ZmajBH, Akbil is not sold any longer. Get an Istanbulkart and load as much fares on it as you want. More than one person can use one card.

So it will be better to use a istanbul card than pay for each single ride?

How do you use them and where do i have to buy them at taksim/istikal?

You can find one at the corner of McDonald's in Taksim. It'a small kiosk with a signage of "Istanbulkart Satış Noktası on top it.

The deposit may be 6 lira or 10 lira. They've made frequent changes for that and I couldn't have a chance to learn the latest one. So please let me know which one is correct.

Best of luck

Hunbille, thanks for making it more confusing :) at least, it's clear that it's not 10 lira.

Is the akbil completely gone now? I guess what I mean is can you no longer use it or have it refilled?

I suppose I shall just have to leave my little akbil at home in my treasure box, but I really liked how easy it was to use. Unlike the Istanbulkart it never got lost amid all my other cards....the price of progress.

Hi BR, you can use your Akbil while you are in Istanbul. The refill machines were readjusted to serve fir both Akbil and Istanbulkart holders. So don't leave it in the treasure box:)
