5 hour layover at International airport

Hi,

we have 5 hours at the International airport between flights - travelling on UK passports.

Do you know if we can leave the airport, and if so what is possible in such a time frame? Is the old city possible eg

Thanks x

As you'll be on an international flight you will have to check in 2 hours beforehand so that only leaves you 3 hours really.Depending on the time of day traffic going into the city could be horrendous so it would leave you very little time to explore.Near to the airport are a couple of very nice shopping malls and also a few very nice restaurants. So you could kill a couple of hours shopping or have a nice relaxed meal. With so short a time spare I feel it would be risky to go into the centre.

Hi samuk,

A 5 hours layover really means 2.5 hours with clearance times and airport arrival requirements for your international flight departures (2 to 2.5 hours). Therefore the best is to visit the Airport Outlet Mall, which is easily accessible. Take the subway at the Airport to its second stop called "Yenibosna". Get off the subway there and walk to the mall in 5 minutes. You can return the same way. Airport mall has nice restaurants at food court area, lots of shops, an ice rink, and other entertainment. You can spend a couple of hours there. "http://www.airportavm.com.tr/".

You really do not have time to go and enjoy the old city, and come back.

good luck,

I agree with the others that you don't have time to visit the old city. If you want to leave the airport (which you might as well for the sort of time you are talking about as all food and drink there is VERY expensive) and see a bit of Turkey, then you will have to pay GBP 10 each for a visa to be stuck in your passport prior to going through passport control. Also will you have luggage - or can you check it through to your final destination, because returning to the airport you will have to go through all the security controls again.

This is copied from a post by me on the Istanbul restaurants forum on something to do to pass the time:

"There are often enquiries on the Istanbul forum from people spending a few hours in transit at Atatürk Airport and this recommendation is for them.

It's often the case that you can find yourself kicking your heels at the airport for several hours waiting for a domestic or international connection.

The first time this happened to us we were flying from Van to Dalaman and had a 5 hour stopover. Rather than endure the "international cuisine" and inflated prices, we took a taxi to nearby Yesilköy, a 10-minute ride costing about 10 lira currently and had lunch in Yüksel Balik, which is located opposite the suburb's small marina:

We had a great meal. It wasn't cheap, but neither was it grossly expensive and was probably no more than something much less interesting that we would have eaten in Atatürk.

We've done the same thing a couple more times since. Sitting on the terrace in the sunshine looking over to the marina is a great way to pass the time. Last January en route to London it was pouring with rain, but we still sat out on the heated terrace - where we were able to smoke!

Good food (the website shows current prices - you can choose your fish and it will be priced by weight), attentive service and they'll call up a taxi for you to return to the airport."
