dress code

We know the general rules -- no shorts, bring a shawl for religious sites, etc. Is sleeveless for women otherwise OK?

We will be going to Ephesus, which we understand is very hot -- shorts there or no? How about Capadoccia, small villages, beach resorts?

And finally, at the beach, is it European (bikinis/two piece ok) or more conservative (one piece).

We're leaving in two days!

Thanks.

Hi, shorts: "no shorts" certainly for visiting mosques, otherwise fine - especially as weather will be hot! Preferably not too short though - especially for visiting Istanbul - in my opinion anyway they are not really suitable city wear!

Beach: bikinis, one piece - whatever, no problem!

Only other thing is you will want some decent footwear - in Istanbul you will be on your feet and walking around the different places a lot'; Ephesus - a lot of stone paths worn and made slippery by the feet of the millions of visitors; Cappadocia - you will no doubt be doing some walking/hiking in the valleys.

Have a great trip!

I forgot - read what Tom Brosnahan has to say about apparel for women visiting Turkey in his invaluable Turkey Travel Planner:

I agree with the first reply. There's no problem with dress on the beaches; even topless is generally accepted for women. If you're going further inland however, to more conservative communities, you would need to be more modest.

In any case, mosques usually have appropriate coverings available to be borrowed by visitors.

As regards Ephesus, yes, it can be VERY hot, and there's very little shade. A sunhat is a must, as is plenty of high-factor suncream.

In any beach resorts you can wear the same as anywhere else in Europe, bikins are fine on the beach. Shorts are fine in Ephesus.

The only place you need to cover up is if you are visiting a mosque or if you intend on going to any very remote, traditional villages.
