Eastern Turkey

We enjoyed a visit to the major tourist circle of Western Turkey in 2009. We are now interested in visiiting Eastern Turkey and would appreciate some input into where and when we should go.

Well, definitely not in winter, as a large part of Eastern Anatolia is on average 6,000 ft above sea level and the winter's are very harsh.

The best time to visit is really any time between May and September.

We made a trip a few years ago, flying into Trabzon, where we rented a car, visited local sites such as the Sumela Monstery and Uzengöl and then made our way, witha detour into the Black Sea side of the Kaçkar Mountains, up to Rize, across to Artvin and then stayed a night on the inland side of the Kaçkars at Yusefeli, then on to Kars, especially to see the ruined city of Ani on the border with Armenia, on to Dogubayazit to view Mt. Ararat and the Ishak Pasa Palace and finally down to Van, from where we flew back to Istanbul.

Our trip was in late April/early May; there was still some snow on high ground and the weather on the Black Sea coast was appallingly wet. A little later and much more would have been open in the Kaçkar Mts, but all in all it was a great trip.

Our trip which was similar to Dudisimo's, with the recommended addition of Macahel, Borcka Black Lake and Savsat, was in late August. It was a much better time, although we still needed a light windbreaker at night and faced some wet weather also.

Your problem will be returning the car somewhere other than your point of rental. It may only be possible with Avis, and maybe even not that. So you my need to draw a circular route.

Beware of going South of Van. Will make sense to backtrack to Kars and then go west to Erzurum and Gumushane and then down to Trabzon, or return to the coast from Ispir via Ovit mountain and Ikizdere valley above Rize.

Consider Dedeman hotel in Rize, Tema guest House at camili village, Marsis Pansiyon at Barhal village, Laset Otel at Savsat and Kar's boutique hotel in Kars. some cheap, some expensive, but all satisfactory in terms of what is available.

We actually rented a car in Trabzon from a local company and arranged for someone to come and pick it up in Van - the pick up charge was 350 TL.
