Hi, we are planning on driving from Cappadocia to Konya to Pamukkale to Bodrum over 8 days. How is driving in Turkey. Buses are our second choice only because we are travelling with kids and seems like having a car to store all our stuff during the day seems better than carrying it with us everywhere.

Driving in Turkey needs some getting used to as the rules are 'looser' than in US or Europe. In a previous post after a similar question I gave a couple of points to consider, I'll repeat them here :

* Keep your eyes open and never assume people will follow the well known traffic rules such as stopping at red lights!! and don't assume they have seen you coming. Expect a car, lorry, minubus, bus, tractor, motorbike from everywhere.

* Watch out for lorries coming towards you, there is usually someone overtaking them without looking your way.

* People sometimes drive very impatiently driving very close to you from behind and beeping, just ignore them and let them go.

* Watch out for the minibuses (Dolmus) and coaches, they can stop anywhere anytime without warning to take or leave passengers.

* When you are more used to driving, drive confidently, don't expect people to give you way, you will need to be firm.

Otherwise you'll be OK:-) Seriously once you get used to the style of driving it feels natural.

Hope this helps,

Kozano

Hi,

These subjects, both driving and to lesser extent driving from Cappadocia to Bodrum, were discussed in the forum. You can find them by writing the "Cappadocia Bodrum driving" words in the search box on top of the page.

If you ask my opinion, driving suits you better. It will be lot easier, carrying the bags will be a problem with kids really, also since you have 8 days, for the whole trip, you can do it in a relaxed way.

Of course I assume you are not sparing the whole 8 days to go from Cappadocia to Bodrum. You can divide it at most to two. One night in Egirdir (instead of Konya) and the next to Pamukkale. Most probably you will stay in Selcuk near Ephesus too.
