Anyone who goes to the East and expects non-smoking to be the norm hasn't done their homework. Smoking is standard stuff: as soon as Europe and the welfare state stops, heavy smoking starts. It is next to impossible in Tashkent, for example, to get a hotel room which has not been smoked in, and it is naive to go there with expectations that one will. ( Quite irrespective of what the hotelkeepers tell you).
