Tourist Visa (only visiting Ashgabat)

Is it true that you can get a visa to just visit Ashgabat and go around unguided? If so, which companies offer this LOI support?

I'm so confused by the bureaucratic process!!

I can't answer your question but have you tried the LP forums? Ashgabat is a pretty tightly controlled place, security cams and police everywhere. We had a guide to tell us where we could go by ourselves and where not. Strict rules for taking photos too. It's a pretty amazing place though. Everything built since independence is kind of like a fantasy city with all the Italian marble etc. It's the exact opposite of the villages 20 minutes out of the city.

The answer is no, unless you are a citizen of a former soviet state and then the answer is maybe.

You can get a three day transit visa that allows you to transit the country (entry and exit ports must be different) without a guide but I have heard second hand) of a number of these being refused with no reason being given.

You don't however need to be watched 24 hours a day. On one day our guided tour finished at lunch time and we shopped for carpets and wandered around on our own until nightfall.

Really depends on the guide. Some let you get around by yourself a bit more than others. They are getting stricter since the government is on their as a lot more than before.

Hard to believe that all this bureaucratic nonsense has led to only 26 forums and 95 posts on TA!

I'd like to bump this thread and see if any new info has come about, because I am also confused about the visiting process. I would like to visit the country for a few days next year but am not really sure to what extent I can or am able to. What language do the guides speak to you in?

A company in Ashgabat handled our visa support (visa on arrival crossing from Uzbekistan) but we had a private tour complete with hotels, transport and guides arranged by them. Our itinerary included Ashgabat, Mary, Darvaza and Dashoguz.- Koneurgench. We had 3 different guides, all of whom spoke perfect English.

The theory with a Turkmenistan visa is Transit Visas mean you're traveling thru the country to another. The Transit Visas must be obtained directly from the Embassy not travel agents.Transit visas are good 3-5 days. You must have visa for the next country before getting a visa for Turkmenistan .In the case you don't need one depending your nationality & destination.A tourist visa gives you more allowed time in Turkmenistan up to 14 days you would have to get thru travel agent in Turkmenistan in which they obtain LOI with a package they'll sell you.One would. Visit Turkmenistan on a transit visa can roam on their own yet must stick to entry exit points can't detour of routing between two points. On a Tourist visa you can buy a package then stay in Ashgabat without a guide yet outside city limits you need a guide with tourist visa.Everything is written in stone once you apply for LOI .The agency will meet you at border crossing into the country with a migration card cost $12.00 USD .They will escort you when you leave as they're responsible to you.The agents will register you on Tourist visa a Transit visa you don't need to register yet on your own getting into out of country.
