Day trip to Pinawalla elephants and Kandy

We are a family of four with two teenagers staying in Colombo near lake Beira. in April and we want to visit the elephants and kandy . Is it best to hire a car and driver for the day or an organised tour. None of the company websites ive seen really tell you how long you would have at the elephant orpanage and my daughter really wants so spend time watching and feeding them. I know its along way to go in a day but we are restricted on days. Also any suggestions for another long day trip to see as much as we can. Thanks

Hi,

The best is to hire a car/van with driver - gives you more flexibility.

Colombo to Pinnawala is approx. 2.5 hours drive. The baby elephants are bottle fed 3 times a day (09:15, 13:15, 17:15). You can buy a ticket to be able to feed a bottle. The elephants are bathing in the river from 10:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 16:00.

Kandy just over an hour from Pinnawala.

Transport for the round trip should cost you approx. LKR 12,000. Then you have to add entrance fees, e.g. Pinnawala LKR 2,000 per person (above 12 years).

You can find other suggestions for day trips here:

If you want to bottle feed the babies , push to the front and wave a 1000 rupee note in the keepers face. You are guaranteed to be given a bottle to feed them with.

You can try with 100 rupees but you may get overlooked.

Meanwhile the local kids will look on with amazement ( noting corruption in action ) - no chance for them ..

AFAIK they have changed that system. A limited number of tickets are on sale for each feeding session.

Please take note that there are some dodgey elephant places close to the orphanage that may be suggested to you in a positive light. You will beable to feed, ride, wash the elephants yourself. Our kids were easily side-tracked with this. As soon as we entered we immediately totally regretted it. We saw 5 sad, tired, thin elephants, one with a cut behind the ear. It was also very hard sell and the people who worked there were the only unpleasant Sri Lankans we met on our whole trip. I wasn't happy that we had helped fund the maltreatment of these animals.
