Official Airport Taxis/Taxi scams

Yes, it's that question again. ;o)

I was in Sri Lanka last year but I was only going to Negombo and the cost of the taxi wasn't an issue. We are arriving again next Sunday and we are going direct from the airport to Aluthgama. Can someone remind me what the story is with regard to official taxis and where we pick them up?

Also, what taxi scams do we have to look out for?

There 3-4 taxi counters at the airport.

Avoid people approaching you and offering transport.

Are the official desks labelled as such?

Yes, they have name boards above their counters.

Didn't I read somewhere that these taxis were only for locals or has that changed?

You can't miss them really. I'm sure if you went to the locals only taxi desk (not that I knew there was one), you'd be redirected to the presumably more expensive taxi desks for tourists ? :)

Yes but scams are rife in Sri Lanka and forewarned is forearmed. I am not being cynical. I was there last year and I kind of got the impression that for many Sri Lankans scamming tourists is the next national sport after cricket.

to be fair -i have used these guys several times with no problem- u just need to be upfront and know your price-believe me i am as paranoid as they get when it comes to being scammed-and afterall it is a service -if u are not happy walk away- i am sure experts on the forum can give a guide price and advice further on ' reliable taxi firms'--+ scams are rife wherever u go in asia/africa but u probably know that-enjoy
