Weather in Sri Lanka in June '06 on the south-west coast

I would like to take a honeymoon in Sri Lanka, maybe Negombo last two weeks in June and was wondering what the weather maybe like, as all I keep reading is that there are monsoons. Anybody help?

Hi Zila,

Yes there will be monsoon WINDS. Not necessarily all day rains, even more dry than raining esp. more to the South.

Take our June 2005 trip as an example: started at Yala, then Tangalle, Galle ending in Bentota. Yala was perfect sunny weather. Tangalle also sunny but more wind. Galle very windy, and a mix of clouds and sun; brief showers in between. Bentota, finally, was mostly grey skies and an occasional monsoon shower.

So Negombo is probably a worse choice than e.g. Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna or Koggala which are more to the south.

All the best,

Thanks for this, can you advise of any decent hotels to stay in, in Tangalle or Yala?

No experience with Tangalle. Yala has the Yala Safari Village, a nice hotel. Most rooms are not on beach side but a minority of them is; remember it's not a typical beach resort but a safari place....

Another option would be the Oasis at Hambantota, which is a good beach resort nearby.
