best places to visit in Sri Lanka

My husband and I plan on spending 12 days in Sr Lanka from the 12th March. We would like advise on the best places to visit in this amount of time. We realise we won't get to see it all and we don't want to rush around and cram too much in. Taking our time and enjoying the places that we do get to visit are our priority. We want to end the trip by spending a few days at a beach.

Finally, what is the best way to get around? Is public transport an option or getting a private driver a better idea?

We appreciate any advise you're happy to give.

Hi Peebjay

Coming from the Sunshine State with fantastic beaches you may be a bit disappointed by the SL beaches. the one nearest the airport at Negombo is not swimmable and I wouldn't enter the water at Mt Lavinia either. what beach activity are you after?

The truly unique places are in the Cultural Triangle - Anuradhapura - Polonnaruwa including Mihintale, Sigiriya, Dambulla plus quite a few other interesting smaller sites such as Ritigala and the National Parks for elephants etc with the third point of the triangle being Kandy. The gardens at Peredeniya may not interest you as the type of plants there are somewhat the same as we have there and we generally don't like the fruit bats.

Ella is a lovely viillage with a lovely walk up Little Adam's Peak and up to Ella Rock if your body cooperates. The train trip from Nanu Oya to Ella is especially recommended. You can visit a tea plantation here or enroute to Nanu Oya, assuming you will hire a driver .From Ella you can go to the South Coast for beach time.

If you can manage it an excursion up Adam's Peak is a lifetime experience. Go from Delhousie.

That would cover 12 days quite nicely.

Hope that helps.

Regards

Archi

Thanks Archi for your advice. Should we organise a driver before we go or can we hire one once we arrive in Sri Lanka?

Thanks again

Hi, again.

It's best to organise a driver before arrival as you can confirm an itinerary that will maximise your time, agree on the prices of transport and get an idea of the personality and character of the driver during negotiations. Make sure that you go with someone who is recommended by frequent travellers/posters. You have probably been spammed by now!

Driver/guides can also arrange accommodation for you as per your advised budget and guidelines. Saves several kinds of hassles.

Regards

Archi
