Itinerary for trip South West Sri Lanka in August

All,

We will be in Sri Lanka From August 4th-25th. We have already arranged a two night stay in Colombo to get acquainted a bit and we have also planned our accommodation for the second part of the holiday in which we will be in and around Kandy, Anuradhapura, Sigiriya and Trincomalee.

We now have a week left between Colombo and Kandy and we would like to fill that wisely. No beaches are necessary but we would like to see Galle, Nuwara Eliya, a park and Adam's Peak? It seems a bit much so what could be for traveling between Colombo and Kandy and see as much as possible from the area? We do not have car/driver.

Thanks a lot for your feedback.

Hi Martijn,

Peak is closed until fullmoon December, do NOT try it. You could e.g. do Galle (stay in Unuwatuna or Hikka), Sinharaja or Yala, Ella/Haputale and then only a few hours Eliya in transit to Kandy. Do include the train ride Ella/Haputale to Nanu Oya (Eliya), part of the nicest stretch of the island.

Groetjes,

Bedankt Erik for your prompt reply. We will be travelling accordingly by the looks of it.

We will be travelling from Colombo to Unawatuna, visiting Galle and maybe surroundings if weather permits. We will also be travelling from Ella to Nuwara Eliya and onwards to Kandy.

At least two questions remain:

* What is the advised route from Unawatuna to Ella? and by what means? How easy would be bus travel with two people and large backpacks in August? What would be appr. cost for taxi?

* Is it worth staying in all three places 2 nights or should we take your suggestion and split the trip to Ella through Sinharaja? Is that (more) convenient for public transport travel? We won't be going to Yala.

Thanks again.

After Kandy and the central part, we did Ella (Ella Rock, Little Adams and tea factories) 3 nights, Tissa (for Bundala/Yala) 2 nights. Tangalle (for beach) 2 nights and Galle 2 nights.

You can easily spend 3 nights in Ella.

Only 1 night needed for Tissa, but we cycled around bird-watching, so the 2 nights were good for us.

Enjoyed my time in Tangalle, as it was relaxing, but there is not really much to do there and the sea was too rough to swim. We had a lot of rain there, so it was a bit of a waste.

Only 1 night needed for Galle, if you stay in Galle. 2 nights, if you stay outside and take a day trip in. I never went to Unawatuna, so can't comment if it was better to stay there, but I enjoyed staying in the fort area, as it was different to all our other accommodation. Galle was really hot in the middle of the day, so walking around in the morning and evening was best.
