Sri Lanka in September

Hi.

Me and my husband is going to Sri Lanka in the begining of september for 2 weeks.

We would like to visit a national park, but read that Yala probably is closed. Is there any other parks that is recomended at this time? would like to se leopards, elephants etc.

We also would like to go to the beach for a few days, is there beaches which are more suitable at this period, due to weather/activities?

Other places/ things to do that are recomended at this time?

Thanks:)

Yala NP will likely not be closed in September. It has not been for the last couple of years. Instead they bring in water for the animals by bowsers.

East coast beaches are best in September, but reef protected beaches at e.g. Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna are safe for swimming.

Weather in the southwest is usually sunny in September with occasional late afternoon/evening showers.

Hi

Where did heard that about Yala closing?? I don't think so, Wilpattu NP could one choice, Menneriya park good for Elephants s well.

Beach- Depends on what you want to do, best is Trinco / pasikuda area,

Swimming is not safe in south except Hikkaduw and Unawatuna due to rough sea.

Hi Oslo!

The info about seasonal closing of Yala is outdated, it'll be open. The only other park fitting your wishes is Wilpattu, but Yala and Wilpattu have as pro the variety and as con the few isolated elephants; e.g. Udu Walawe and the Habarana parks have huge herds of elephants, esp. Aug-Sept Habarana has the impressive 'gathering'. Yala also, esp. at weekends, suffers from visitor overcrowding.

The southwestern beaches are okay and have most activities, but won't allow snorkel/dive/surf and only limited swimming (behind the few reefs). The east coast has best surf (Arugam) and swim/snorkel/dive (Passekudah and Trinco).

Many other things are interesting year-round; e.g. hills (Haputale/Ella), Kandy (botanical gardens, culture) and the Triangle (e.g. Sigiriya fortress and Dambulla temple) - which is near the Habarana parks.

Hope this gives some idea,

We'll look in to all your sugestions and looking forward to our stay in Sri Lanka:)

Would you recomend booking hotels before we go to Sri lanka or is it just as easy to book while travelling around?

Hi again,

Great! Well it's best to have your operator/driver (or yourself through Internet) book 1-2 days ahead; walk-in rates are often the heavily overpriced 'rack rates', and anyhow if bargaining won't help in many areas the next hotel is miles away so the search process can take you hours.

All the best,

Hi,

I am also visiting Sri Lanka in September and it has recently been announced that Yala will be closed for the month due to drought and renovation work. From the reseach I've been doing it seems that finding elephants elsewhere won't be a problem but is there anywhere with a good chance of spotting leopards, from what I've found they appear to be rarer in the other parks.

Thanks in advance :)

Hi!

If you are thinking of leopards then wilpattu is the best option in case of yala being closed.

Cheers!
