train from colombo to anuradhapura

our plan is to go by train from colombo international airport to Anuradhapura. But how to come to the railway station in the best way? Is there direct bus between the airport and the train station? If we need to take a taxi, what is a reasonable price? We will land in Colombo around 8-9 in the morning.

Can we buy train ticket just before the train leave or must we buy the ticket in advance? Is is free seats or can we make reservations for the seats at the train?

What time will the transport take to the train station?

bye, Goran

Hi Goran,

There is more or less a direct bus. First take the free shuttle bus from Arrivals to Katunayake bus stand, goes every 20 mins and takes 5 mins. From there bus 187 to opposite railway station, takes around 90 mins. Alternative is a taxi, takes 60-90 mins (as you're in rush hour, assume 90) and costs around Rs 2,500. You could also consider taking the taxi to Gampaha or Ragama station, some of the A'pura bound trains stop there too.

There are a few trains to A'pura with reservations and the rest is without. At this time of the day, after Polgahawela you will almost certainly have a seat; until that station a risk of having to stand.

All the best,

<Erik> & [Sandya]
