recent shootings (& deaths!)

I am curious as to how many of you have immediately canceled any plans to visit northern Pakistan?

And what alternate trips have been suggested by your tour companies, if you are using one.

Trekkers and mountaineers were once thought to be a protected class. Obviously that is not the case any longer.

I suspect that people still planning to travel to Northern Pakistan for mountaineering and trekking might find it harder, if not impossible, to get visas in future, making cancellation essential.

When I first applied for my visa in April 2013 it was considered necessary by Gilgit Baltistan tour/trek operators to avoid all mention of Gilgit in your itinerary, according to Ty Gordon at Lost Horizon Tours & Treks. When I arrived in Islamabad en route for Gilgit, there was a rumour that some American tourists had recently been turned back on KKH and told to return to Islamabad. (Can't confirm rumour, that's just what I heard on the road, don't know why they were allegedly turned back.) Consequently, Lost Horizon Tours & Treks considered it necessary to meet us at the airport and escort us up KKH by road because, presumably, we had a better chance of being allowed to enter GB if accompanied by a licensed tour operator. That was three weeks before the Taliban attack. Trying to get through Kohistan by road must be much more difficult now but I admire the courage of anyone still willing to try.
