Best resorts for snorkelling - travelling in October

We're planning our honeymoon for the end of October, and have found quite a few resorts that we like the look of. All are within budget, but we're not sure where has the best snorkelling direct from the beach. Also, which have the best restaurant options? The hotels we're looking at are:

Lux Maldives

Kuramathi

Kuredu

Reethi

Meeru

Komandoo

Also, are any of these better weather-wise than the others, given that we're going towards the end of October?

Thank you!!

Of the 3 I've been to, they go in this order for snorkeling:

Komandoo

Good reef close to the shore, lots of fish and live coral

Kuredu

Deep reef far from shore (5-20m deep 50m from shore) but access from jetty - lots of fish and lots of turtles between shore and reef - not much live coral.

Meeru

No reef from shore, not that many fish, lots of baby sharks and sting rays on coastline as with most islands but that's as good as it gets from what i remember.

Weather, going to all be similar on all of them in october, mixed weather most likely lots of sun as well as clouds and rain but you could get lucky or unlucky! will be hot as always either way.

Out of that list it would have to be Komandoo for me, Lux and Meeru have no reef, Kuredu we really did not like and we was only there for a night!, Reethi we have not done yet!! but not in the same class as Komandoo, so I have been told! Kuramathi ... We have snorkelled the reef but not stayed on the island.

Regarding restaurants, of the 3 i mentioned.

Kuredu is the best option for me, more choice, lots of varied restaurants, stunning modern over the sea restaurant with lights under water to attract sharks at night which you can view from your table. Can choose to be either in lively restaurants/bars with atmosphere or quiet romantic options.

Meeru, lots of choice also, a nice Asian restaurant on the sea with glass windows to see through, but there's not many fish to see so?

Komandoo ... meh.. quieter and less choice, nice a la carte restaurant over the sea, but the snorkeling makes up for it I guess. Not for me, or my wife, but most people on this forum seem to prefer it and that's why they choose the maldives, for the quiet.

Hi

Its got to be Komandoo or Kuramathi for snorkeling.

Komandoo good snorkeling, great service, adult only and a small island.

Kuramathi good snorkeling, great service, fantastic dinning options, but a very large island.

Kuredu is a nice island but if snorkeling is big on your priority its not up to the standard of the others

I would say...

If you want a large island with lots of restaurants and a good reef off the beach....then check out kuramathi. But you would need to look at select AI for dine around and also check out the room locations as they are not all really close to the reef.

If you want a small, adults only island with excellent service and a good reef off the beach then check out Komandoo. However it only has one (excellent) buffet restaurant plus one a la carte restaurant. There is more info on my blog on here from nov if you want more details.

There is no house reef off the beach at Meeru - you have to go out on scheduled boat trips for reef snorkelling.

The best restaurants at an island with a decent house reef is kuramathi from that list. Maybe komandoo is a better honeymoon island as it is adults only and does not attract the sort of crowd as say Kuredu with its white night party nights and various excesses. Lux and meeru have no house reef either.

Hi

Don't let the white night put you off kuredu because you don't have to get involved , you can easily go to another bar on the 1 night its going on . We spent a lot of time chilling in the O bar at night its really nice and adult only. Kuredu dedicates a large section of the island to adults only including a pool , restaurant and bars . kuredu has some fantastic beaches too with a large sand bank .

As said you will see lots of fish, turtles and rays but if you are looking for that finding Nemo reef it will disappoint you .

Darryl

PS, I am not sure Why Kenny is degrading this island with his comments ,but trust me its a great island

I am only kidding, I love kuredu... only kuramathi is tempting me to go somewhere else otherwise we will return to kuredu!

The best thing about Kuredu is you have 2 holidays in one. The quiet tranquil side, romantic and chilled. Then the other side with active bars and restaurants where you can.. you know.. socialise, share your experiences and give each other advice on what to do tomorrow!

For example, sat inside at a bar and someone comes in and tells us to come to the decking as there is a huge pod of spinner dolphins coming through, if not for that other person we'd have missed it! Someone also showed me a great moray eel which i'd have missed. Lonely islands are not for me.

Also, I have a few nemos on video from kuredu reef, I'm putting a little video together of kuredu reef only so people can get an idea what to expect as SOME people say it's not worth getting in the water for.

If you like turtles, Kuredu is one of the best islands. As well as being on the house reef, there are "caves" on the outer reef where lots of turtles go to sleep and come up only for air, some of them are huge.

Kenny

I loved Kuredu too but the OP is asking for the best snorkeling !!! Komandoo has 4 resident turtles , the reef is much better and closer to the beach . you need to be a confident swimmer to snorkel kuredu's reef ,I know .

If you like the 2 holidays in 1 feeling then Vilamendhoo has the same set up ,is half of the size , has a better vibe and a fantastic, shallow reef only a few feet from the beach .

If you like the big island feel ,Kuramathi has better dinning options and a good reef .

The point is no one is saying that Kuredu isn't a good island ( apart from the sun comments ) but some of the other islands on the list are better suited to the OP .
