underwater camera ????

Hi every one just wondered if anyone has any ideas about which digital camera is best and is it better to buy one that does both ie land and underwater or buy two one for each action, i have in the past bought buy one get one free underwater cameras from boots which in fairness have taken some very good photos and also i do not dive only snorkell so would it be worth the expence of buying a specialist camera although i do enjoy taking underwater photos

regards susie

LOL Susie. Yes, losing your weight belt will certainly turn you into a Polaris missile..........

With a good patient instructor I'm sure you'll be fine & Simon will doubtless say the same when he reads this.....

Best of luck Susie!

Hi Susie

Great to hear your going to learn ..

Where is your dive school located ? .. and the big question is: are you going to to your dives here or at Vakaru ?

I am at Stoney this weekend helping with students .. if you decide to go here and it is at Stoney Cove let me know on here , I might be down if it's a weekend .. if not I certainly hope to see you on the dhoni at Vakaru ..

My big tip for learning is .. Relax and enjoy it .. take your time with the skills and you should have no problems ..

Hey Simon. How is Stoney these days? Been a while since I was there as it's a bit of a hike (3 & 1/2 hour drive). I last went about a month after they sunk the little ship in there so some time ago. I've heard it's been improved since then......must be just down the M1 for you...........

Hi Rex

Just 45mins drive on an empty M1 early on a Sunday morning

The big change is the new shop/school building :

http://www.stoneycove.com/about_uww.htm

Still the same things apart from an army APC at about 8m .. it's great that I am so close but a real drag i'm 300 miles from the south coast ..

Going to Wemouth in June , St Abbs and hopfully Plymouth this year as well .. Planning a full week in Scapa next year and then the big trip to Bikini Atoll in Apr 2008

Simon - 45 mins? It's alright for some. The nearest decent lake to me (excluding the local puddles) is Gildenburgh near Peterborough & that's a good 2 hr + drive so needless to say I don't go much in the UK. Annoying thing is I live about 1 mile from the North Sea which has loads of wrecks in my area from WW2 but viz is normally about 6 inches & that's not fun!

Scapa has great reviews & you know how I feel about Bikini!! I'm guessing you've checked out their website?

http://www.bikiniatoll.com

There's great info there & some really informative links.

You taking an underwater PSP or book for your deco stops when there?.......lol.

USS Saratoga - give her my regards & have a great time there. It's not often you get to dive an aircraft carrier the size of RMS Titanic, sitting upright in a tropical lagoon is it.........

Just you or is the other half going too? I'm still trying to persuade mine it's worth the trip but with her being a non diver...........

Hi Simon

The dive school is in Stourbridge, West Midalnds, and yes i think it is Stoney Cove that they said I would do my first dive, sounds cold to me, but i have looked on their web site and it looks very nice there (thats if i ever get that far) they said the course was performance based not time but i'm not a spring chicken any more so i could be on a zimmer frame by the time i get to do a dive haha

Rex

Yes.. seen the site thanks .. we have our places booked and deposits paid .. No wife this time .. myself and two other lads .. we all have our " once in a lifetime passes " LOL .. ( just have to persuade her to let me go to Truk one day ) :-)

I have done Scapa twice before but only for long weekends so a week will give me much more time to do more of the wrecks .. i am not much of a scenic UK diver .. if it's not metal i'm not that bothered .. Much rather go to warm water .. Maldives , Red Sea etc for pretty things..

Susie

Hope to see you down Stoney then .. as I said .. let me know when you are going ..

Suzie,

Have been reading this thread as I have just bought an underwater camera for my husband. Hope you don't mind me writing with a bit of advice.

I learnt to dive 5 years ago and am still sometimes nervous before a dive but in some ways that is a good thing as if you become too over confident you don't respect the water and could put yourself in danger!

When I learnt I was VERY nervous - I had only learnt to swim as an adult a few years previous and hated putting my face in the water! LOL I so wanted to see the coral reefs and all the beauty they had to offer so I forced myself to learn to dive. DON'T be afraid to tell people how frightend you are then they can look out for you more - you will be surprised how helpful and sympathetic some of the instructors and dive masters are - despite their macho appearance. I think it is far better to be honest about how you are feeling and then they will spend extra time helping you - after all that is their job and what you are paying them for!

When you are asked to do a skill - TAKE YOUR TIME! You will manage it a lot easier if you don't rush or panic. It says in the open water handbook that when you mask clear you should start to breathe out BEFORE tilting your head back this really does work. As regards turnig your air off - again try not to panic - the moment you signal the dive instructor will turn it back on and it comes through immediately. In anycase as all your skills are practiced in the pool you are never far from the surface. I know it is easy to say but just relax - it is so worth it when you can finally dive those beautiful reefs!

I have gone on to do my Advanced Open Water. Unfortunately I only get to dive once a year when on holiday as we can't afford to dive all year round but I LOVE diving and am so pleased I learnt - mind you that still doesn't stop me being nervous - especially when it comes to Scuba Tune Ups just before a holiday. Ours are booked for 3 weeks time! I think one of the problems with the skills (at least for me) is I hate feeling I am being judged but it is daft really as the instructors really do want you to be successful. I remember when I did my open water - I had terrible problems with cramps and nearly didn't complete it but I was so pleased when I did and the instructor gave me a big hug!

I know you can do it - let me know how you get on.

Best wishes,

Ingrid
