More recent scams -

No money scam. - People will approach with various excuses on why they have no money, like lost wallet, sick child..etc Asks you for money and they pay you back. They of course never do.

Donate to Charity - People will approach in the name of various charitable organizations asking for donations. Some are outright con jobs, some are professional fund raisers. You won't know how much of your contribution will actually reach the actual charity.

Monks - There are many fake monks roaming the streets like Jalan Alor, asking for monetary donations. The real monks can only ask for food, and only in the mornings

ATM scams - When withdrawing money from an ATM, groups of tricksters will create a distraction via way of dropping money on the ground. When you bend down to pick up the money, they either will take your cash, or your card.

ATMs - know what skimming machines look like and where cameras to obtain PINs may be hidden. Practice covering your PIN entry.

General - whilst on holiday, enjoying a meal or a beer don't let your guard down - chance thefts!. Forgetting to pick up valuables or generally being too relaxed about belongings, or casually walking along the road with a shoulder bag is the easiest way to get things stolen by chance theives.

Room Safes - use them! Don't leave phones, cameras, laptops, ipods etc laying around when not in the room - avoid temptations.

Monks are not allowed to beg for money in Buddhist rules they are not allowed to selling staff for money either, they only allowed beg for food before 12 pm. There are many monks in KL like in Jln Alor or Chinatown begging for money or try to sell something they are fake monks! These fake monks look like criminal more than monk!

Touting at express bus terminal.

Thia is getting from bad to worse.

The touts are very bold and elusive.

Relevant enforcement authority are still half awaked or" sleeping."

All travellers are targeted, local and foreigners.....

These people work in group with walkie talkie, super efficient with bus availity and do not had official counter.

Overbooking is very common with them.

You may end up without a bus seat.

Mode of operation.

They will hang outside ticketing booths.

Seeing any potential victims, they will ask you" where are you going"

Best to ignore them and head for the official ticketing booth.

Or you may end up with poor quality coach or" a no show coach" without redress.

Buy only from official bus ticketing booths.

Butterworth.

People arriving by train are told by taxi drivers at the train station that the ferry is not running - they then get stung for a long taxi ride they don't need.

Always head to the ferry terminal.

1)Shared taxi are charged per passengers unless you chartered the whole taxi(then per vehicles rate)

2)city taxi per vehicle rate apply, allowed to load max.4 passengers

3)Airport NGV budget vehicles only allowed to carry 3 passengers only.

4)Airport taxi above 1600cc is classified as premium taxi.

5)Bus to Penang must reach Penang Island and not Butterworth(main land)

6)Bus to Singapore must also reach Singapore Island ,some bus will stop dead at JB when passenger load is insufficient.

<< No money scam...Donate to Charity...Monks >>. Foreign organised groups were reported to be behind these activities.

"Getting up to RM10,000 a month... That's how much foreign beggars, some dressed as monks, are said to be raking in as runners for organised syndicates from the unsuspecting and ever-generous Malaysian public..." - findarticles.com/p/…

"Malaysian Immigration officers have arrested...and seized RM16,000 (US$5,081) in cash, which is believed to be one month’s ncome collected from begging...Aged 40 to 80, those arrested were believed to have entered Malaysia on tourist visas and were able to live well in the country by begging..." - www.theepochtimes.com/n2/content/view/41999/

The reports took an unexpected twist when a foreign beggar actually went to a complaints bureau for "help to recover RM30,000 allegedly owed to him by his 'boss' for months of 'work' "- thestar.com.my/news/story.asp…

Back from KL yesterday. We were a group of 7 from India and our last stop was in KL for 2 days. While on our way back from dinner at the Gopalas restaurant in little India, we were stopped by a car and 2 very intimidating men flashed some card at us and posed as police and demanded to check out bags for drugs and cash. They checked our bags and kept smelling the money - dollars and ringgits. There was also a lady in the back of the car who kept taking our bags and passed to the man in the front seat. They took out all our money and zoomed passed us in a fraction of second, before we could even realize it, we lost about 1500 usd. We were in a shock and helpless. We tried to file a complaint, but the police were hardly of any help. They made us wait till 2 pm in the night saying that a patrol car will take us to the nearest police station. The incidence happened at about 10.30pm and there were people around us who didn't even offer to help. The police van was just at a 50 meter distance on the next road.

This is my attempt to alert all traveling to kuala lumpur to be aware of such things and take care of urself.
