Purchasing Prescription Drugs in Cambodia

Coming to Cambodia later this year for both vacation and hopefully to get some medication filled. Would welcome any advice/experience you have in purchasing prescription drugs/medication in Cambodia (instead of going to Thailand again).

Which Pharmacies here do you think is reliable for not having fake medication?

Do Cambodia customs care what type or quantity of medication or the you take out of the country?

Is most types of medication (like lipitor/tricor, testosterone....) sold in Pharmacies?

thanks,

John

Just want to share a little information. Cambodia is having big trouble with fake medicines, since lot of Pharmacy selling the fake one in stead of the real. There are few places which I feel more confident to buy the medicines there.

I would not go to Cambodia to buy prescription drugs, I wouldn't even buy non-prescription drugs in Cambodia - too many places selling black market/fake stuff and as for chemists/pharmacy stores like you might get at home - forget it.

Just curious... what meds are you wanting to buy that you can't buy at home?

Yes, Cambodian customs and postal authorities do check on "drugs" leaving the country as several recently reported court cases clearly indicate.

But of more concern to you should be the sophisticated scanning and detecting systems of your own country on return home and the laws there.

Otherwise most 'pharmaceutical' products are available without script/prescription over the counter in Cambodia but with no assurances as to efficacy, potency, origin, within expiry date, or purity etc. etc from untrained/unqualified non-pharmacist vendors of such products.

Since you do not specify which prescription drugs you want to purchase, it is difficult to advise you. I have lived in Cambodia for 16 years and must by necessity buy drugs that would be "prescription only" in my home country. I would avoid antimalarials since the market is flooded with counterfeits. However I have never had bad luck with antibiotics and have never paid more than 1500 riels a sheath of10 tablets. I can highly recommend Pharmacie de la Gare (mentioned in Lonely Planet), In fact it's the only pharmacy I know of that refrigerates drugs.

I see a huge difference PuBarang between someone living in Cambodia needing meds and someone from the States wanting to go there to "hopefully to get some medication filled" (as a sideline to their holiday). I am still wondering why he/she would simply not get meds at home before travelling.

thmoore, I think I implied an answer as to why one would buy prescription drugs in Cambodia rather than at home. It's cheaper and there is no need to visit a physician to get a prescription. Granted there may be risks involved, but if you're not dripping with money or insurance, it sure seems like a good alterjnative.

true PuBarang, but the the whole idea of getting a prescription is that the doc has prescrbed what you need rather than what you think yo might need. ( meds filled does kinda imply he/she has a prescription though) In these days of drug -resistant bugs, it's even more important not to self prescribe.

Besides if you can afford to travel to Cambodia, you can probably afford to pay home drug prices.

stay healthy
