PP to Chau Doc by boat?

Is this doable - border crossing, etc? Thoughts and suggestions welcome, eg reputable boat companies.

The boat company Hang Chau ll do the run daily between 12.30 to 2 depanding on when the incoming boat from VN arrives.

The run downriver is relatively straightforward, the exit border crossing on the Cambodian side is easy enough BUT, the entry crossing to VN is a hassle.

It's mainly the hoards of kids fighting to carry your bags to the Customs building, but be sure you have plenty of $1 bills to pay them with.

Arriving in Chau Doc, you can stay at the hotel Thanh Loi where you disembark, it's easy enough to walk through the town from here.

There are Xe Hop Dong ( Ford Transit minibus) that go to Sai Gon in about 5 hrs. It's an interesting drive through the countryside.

Thanks hochi1. Do you need to book or take your chances on the day - where? Also, is Chau Doc a good base for exploring the delta or somewhere closer to HCMC? Boat companies/local tour organisers?

It's very easy to do. Went last year and booked tour from Phnom Penh to Saigon which included minibus, boat, hotel in Chau Doc, tour of Cao Dai temple, floating village and incense factory all for $20.

We booked the tour from a place a couple of door down from the lazy gecko restaurant on the street that runs along the lake side in Phnom Penh. There were loads of small travel places there so the prices are very competitive.

Border crossing was fine and didn't take long. At one point though you are told to pay for a cert that verifies you aren't carrying any infectious diseases (no actual examination takes place - only money collection). Think it cost around $6. If you just stand outside though while the rest of the group goes in you won't have to pay it as there is no one there that actually enforces this. Perhaps you could call it a scam but for 6 usd it won't break the bank.

The Hang Chau office is on the right beside the river on Sisowath Qy, ( just after HunSen Park and almost oppsite the Green Vespa cafe ). Best buy your ticket 1 day before.

Chau Doc has the popular 'pilgramage' site of Nui Sam ( Sam mountain ) about 10mins out of town.

Most of the hotels can organise tours of the area so up to yourselves what you have in mind to do.

Long Xuyen is the biggest ciry in the AnGiang province but I think ChauDoc is more 'tourist friendly' than Long Xuyen.

I always use the HueNghia HopDong service to HCMC and stay in the Thanh Ngoc hotel in ChoLon ( Chinatown ) because it's away from the 'tourist areas' If you have 'Maestro' on your ATM card, you can use Vietcombank ATM's countrywide.
