Weather in Dec/Jan: AC rooms necessary?

My fiance and I will be in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh throughout the first two weeks of January. We're on a REALLY tight budget (both university students), and we were looking at budget guesthouses and hotels. Dara Reang Sey & DV8 are our choices for now.... Fan rooms seem to be considerably cheaper. Is the AC an absolute must this time around? Also, if we were to keep our windows open, what is the risk of theft?

You will be fine with fan rooms. the worse times of the year are late feb, march april and may. in june the rains come and cool things down. january and february us locals actually get a chill, especially late at night and in the early am.

as for theft always travel with a bag that you can lock. also use the hotel safe for valuables. many hotels/guesthouses dont have lock boxes and use a common safe. dont leave anything in a room that is near a window. cat burglers are crafty and will even use a long stick. most window have metal grates so a locked back pack or suitcase wont fit through it like a cell phone or wallet. sometimes a simple bicycle cable lock can be used to secure handles on a closet door, or lock a backpack to a piece of furniture. make a copy of your essential documents and keep them separate from the orginals.
