Hiring Mopeds / Scooters in Phnom Penh or Siem Reap
Save

Hi all,

Am off to Cambodia in a couple of days after spending two weeks in Vietnam.

We would really like to hire scooters in either Phnom Penh or Siem Reap.

Is this possible at all and if so does anyone have any recommendations of good / reputable places to get them from.

Many thanks!

If you are not experienced at riding in manic/crazy/unpredictable traffic that goes on the opposite side of the road to what you are used to(and has road rules that revolve around giving way to the biggest vehicle) I'd give it a HUGE miss!

Outlying areas maybe... there have been a number of threads on this topic - try the search function above and see if there is anything useful there. there are also licence issues you'd need to check out

By law, you cannot rent a scootoer/motorcycle in Siem Reap.

Read this thread on scooter/motorcycle rental in Phnom Penh

As Maneki says, you can not rent motorbikes in Siem Reap as it is illegal.

Nothing is stopping you from renting a bike in Phnom Penh though and riding it to Siem Reap but it not advised unless maybe you are very experienced on roads with rules that nobody takes any notice.

We stayed on the edge of Siem Reap, about 10 min from the city center (Palm Village), and our hotel rented bikes, and I'd definitely recommend it. I went biking two mornings, very early, as it was already hot by 7:00, and just took off riding along different country roads which sometimes became just paths. You see a whole different side of Cambodian life than sticking to the main roads. Trying to ride in the middle of Phnom Penh (or maybe even Siem Reap) would be a different story altogether, but I'd definitely do it outside the city, not on main roads.

Do know that if they don't supply helmets, you can buy a decent one for US$15 or less (you can negotiate the price). Definitely make sure your insurance covers riding motorcycles when abroad. Getting airlifted to the nearest hospital is an expensive procedure...

4# Do you mean motor cycles or bicycles?

It is illegal for the hotel to be renting motor cycles in Siem Reap if they are hiring them out.

It sounded like bicycles to me...

DO NOT even think about it and while making up your mind just be sure to read the fine print, all of it, in your travel and medical insurance. And whilst on the subject there is the slight matter of having a valid Cambodian licence for the type and class of vehicle being operated. This is an FAQ. Just use the TA search function for some very recent postings and law changes pending.

There is a world of a difference between going on a guided motor scooter tour, as suggested but not clarified in post Number 8, and just hiring a motobike and headding of in to the unregulated traffic!

Regards. Ian
