Cycling Hue countryside?

Is it easy to get to beautiful/interesting countryside around Hue on a bicycle (not a motorbike)? Let's say, spending about half a day out of the city? Where would you go?

Thanks for all suggestions.

For countryside sightseeing out of Hue City, you can cycle to Than Toan Bridge which has a really interesting historical story. The bridge is in sleepy Thuy Thanh village, 7km east of Hue. Finding it is a bit tricky. Head north for a few hundred metres on Ba Trieu until you see a sign to the Citadel Hotel. Turn right and follow the bumpy dirt road for another 6km past villages, rice paddies and several pagodas.

And you should come along with a local guide for an easy ride.

Good Luck!

I hired a bike for a day, but mainly explored the sights within the reach of Hue - including the Notre Dame church, the small tomb that is within the city (it was closed though), and the Pagoda.

It was actually nice to just cycle around Hue a bit aimless to enjoy the different areas.

You could cycle to some of the other tombs, but you would def need a bit more time. And regarding the rural area, the really beautiful one was outside of Hue in my opinion (like the bridge mentioned by #1), or north of Hue (I passed this area by motorbike with my guide. So maybe doing a motorbike trip for the rural area and tombs might be a better idea, and explore Hue itself by a bike...

Thuy Thanh village (about 8km from Hue city center) would be ideal for a bicycling tour. You'll can admire the rice paddy fields, fruit gardens... here, take photos of Thanh Toan Bridre and other temples, see how the people plant rice, make local cake...

The atmosphere here is very serene and peaceful, perfect for people who want to be away from the hustle and bustle of the city center.

You can choose another option without Thuy Thanh Village, That is Thuy Bieu Village it is acient village and quiet place not far from Hue city, only 7km, experience with local people there. You can rent bicycle from TA or your hotel you stay.

Thanks, all. How long would a 7 or 8 km bike ride, to Thuy Thanh or Thuy Bieu, take on the local roads for 2 reasonably fit cyclists? Are they dirt roads?

About 40 minutes for 1 way to Thuy Thanh or Thuy Bieu, it is not too hard for riding on local roads.

There are many kind of bicycle, you should get good one about 5$ for 1 day.

Why don't you cycle to Hai Van and on to Hoi An. Great adventure on a bike!
