Christmas in Saigon

Hi all,

We are in Saigon for Christmas (23 - 26 December) and I am guessing that the traffic will be hectic on Christmas (24 December). We are staying at Hotel Nikko. I want to be where the action is, I don't want to get stuck in the city without the ability to get a cab (with this said I don't mind walking if its not too far). Does anyone know if we are in the right area to venture out on Christmas night? Or is it best that we stay in our hotel... (boring)

Thanks

Hey Karen, I see that you've already watched some youtube videos.

Here's a short one for the Binh An congregation in District 8:

If you have time, you can follow some of the related links to see all the decorations.

Here's the decoration at the Thanh Da congregation:

If you like, you can catch a taxi to visit those places a few days before Christmas Eve for photo-ops.

Besides bustling and festive atmosphere around the downtown with street foods, souvenirs, greeting cards sold along the streets, you will surprisingly see many children wearing Santa Claus costumes and adults who wear Santa Claus costumes are on their way to deliver Christmas presents to children. They are secretly hired by parents to deliver presents to their children as in fairy tales (one difference is in fairy tales, Mr Santa Claus usually comes through chimney at midnight). Our children are extremely happy to receive presents from Santa Claus and always promise to try harder to receive presents again next years.

You will enjoy to the fullest your time in Saigon on Christmas for sure

If you find it fascinating to see milions of people on motorbikes driving around town and not being able to walk anywhere because people take photos of themselves by xmas decorations, then Saigon is for you. The roar of the traffic and the honking of horns is absolutely insane, i do what i can to avoid center of the city from Xmas -> Tet. If you deaf maybe you will enjoy it, but best bet is you will be going nuts after 1 day.

I know I'm a bit late for this post; but here it is anyway... If you have the chance to be in HCMC (Saigon) a few days before Xmas, you will be in for a treat. What I saw there 5 days before Xmas was nothing short of mind-boggling. You need to imagine almost a million people out in the streets, mostly on bikes, mopeds, and motorcycles; you also need to imagine Xmas lights and decorations that would put any Western city to shame; furthermore, you need to imagine the greetings, the laughing, the shoulder-rubs, and the glad-handing by one of the friendliest people on the planet. The streets in the downtown area were literally packed and walking was your only alternative... There was music everywhere and the place was lit up like Time Square. It was the most energizing and chaotic place to be at that moment - and am I ever glad that I was ! Not to be missed. A lifetime experience !

I remember my Christmas in HCMC - just had the Christmas dinner special on the 24'th coming out of the Duxton hotel had hoped to catch a taxi - that did not happen - it was insanely busy with bikes and pedestrians - but since the streets were beautifully decorated the lights they have on the streets now were like nothing - I didn't mind walking the few blocks to get to taxi that could move faster then I could walk
