ATM Fees for withdrawing cash... in Ho Chi Minh City

Hello all,

I am going to visit Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), from Australia.

I am thinking of loading my credit card with a positive balance and then withdrawing cash from ATMs in HCMC, on a need-to basis (instead of carrying around A$ or US$ cash).***

Does anyone know which banks' ATM machine (in HCMC) don't charge a transaction fee for cash withdrawal using a credit card?

In addition, does anyone know the specific fees charged by the different bank's ATM machine? (i.e. so we could avoid those ATM machines)

Thanks very much in advance!

*** For clarity, I do know that some credit cards provide really bad exchange rate AND/OR impose a foreign exchange etc. fees for cash withdrawals in a foreign currency. My credit card does not (i.e. excellent exchange rate and no fee for cash withdrawals), thus it makes sense for me to use this method to exchange/obtain Vietnamese Dong.

I cant remember any ATM in HCMC that doesn't charge either 20,000 or 30,000 dong.

For most OZ banks your card should be a Cirrus or Maestro .

info tripadvisor.com/Travel-g293921-s601/Vietnam:…

Techcombank 2 months ago was zero fee and 8mil max, 3 ATM in PLN area, but not very visible.

In HCMC there is also Commonwealth at zero, ALWAYS speaking about DEBIT CARD Maestro/master card circuit NOT Visa circuit.

Credit card do not need to have money (those are hybrid cards, not recognized outside your country I guess) and I never tried using one with Techcombank. My zero fee will became a 4E fee so not useful unless you are stuck in a place like Mui Ne where all ATM wants 20.000/30.000d for every 2/3mil so you surrender and pay 3% to the hotel. ^^__^^

But i'm sure sooner or later even Mui Ne will have free ATMs and maybe even sand on the beach.. ^^__^^

LifesExplorer .... It really does depend on how your own bank card interacts with the owners of the ATM. For instance, you quote HSBC bank as being higher than 20k. Using my UK card, 20k per 2 million was what I was charged. I could get 8.4m out. With Sacombank that rose to 30k. Techcombank again I was charged 20k. Of course using my Vietnamese HSBC card I didn't pay anything for using HSBC or Techcombank ATMs but Agribank came in at 20k. Average though is 20-30k per 2 million taken out at the point of distribution.

But for the convenience, it's not something I would get too worked up about. If you need money, ATM's are there and certainly beat going into a Vietnamese bank where you would have a wonderful insight as to how the Vietnamese handle money (your signature would be checked down to its minute detail with the one on your ID) or carrying large wads of cash.
