Hi Vegand,

It is like this in Vietnam, just the people who invite you are motortaxi drivers or tricycle riders. Taxi may slow down their speed and look at you to invite.

If you need a car with driver, the easiest way is to contact your hotel or a car rental company.

be aware that some cyclo drivers and bike guys can try to get a few extra dollars out of you after the trip by pretending that price was different ! or " that was for the short route and I gave you longer trip " routine , I ended up always with notepad and pen in hand, and Id write down the price in dong BEFORE I hopped on bike or cyclo so that there wasnt any arguments at the other end ( Im a fair person- I usually gave intended to give them more anyhow , especially the cyclo guys who often were very good tour guides as it turned out )

Noosa,

It's true. Moreover we were asked to tip. In our trip this month, after visiting Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, the guys on motorbikes after bringing us back to our hotel in Quang Binh Province asked directly if we could give them red packs (“lixi” in their language) for Tet.

My wife said no :-) and she didn’t tip any.

In Tuyen Quang Province, the motorbike riders brought us to 2, 3 places to look for a place to stay. When we tipped them VND10,000 each they looked surprised and wanted to return to us. In rural areas people are purer.

There are travel agents everywhere, either separate agents, in cafes, in internet cafes:cheaper than your hotelfor hiring a driver for the day. No-one offering"transport" or "you got program" like bali, but not hard to find.

Whilst trying to negotiate a ride back from the museum of ethnology, I chanced upon Nguyen, a pleasant and friendly (disabled) rider with hanoi's answer to the tuk tuk in Bangkok.

Apart from taking the ride back to the old quarter, I engaged Nguyen for a half day trip to the Air Force museum the following day. I made 2 unplanned stops at the money changer and a silk shop along the way. Upon completion of the trip, I expected a request for a tip but to my surprise, none came. I gladly tipped him for the service.

I would highly recommend Nguyen to anyone who needs a ride around town, he speaks some English and can provide basic explanation for some of the cultures of locals.

Unfortunately Nguyen doesn’t check his email often but you can make arrangements via a local phone call at your hotel for 5000 dong. His mobile phone number is 0983076095

I think you will need to take an extra bit of caution when engaging drivers in Vietnam. Personally, I will not take any rides offered to me on the street (I have just read of one too many scams). Ask your hotel for a recommendation, or go with one of the top taxi companies like Mai Linh. At Hanoi airport especially one must be cautious to get the right taxi. I went pricing rides downtown there and got extremely high quotes ($18.-36.) for a ride that should cost much less. Vietnam Airlines has a mini-bus that cost $2. to a central location in Hanoi. Unfortunatly, many in Viet have learned that the tourist is an easy mark.

We are booked with Hanoi Kids tomorrow. They're coming to the hotel to collect a group of 6 of us. We will take taxis as we need to but they will guide us all day. Have a look at their website. Lots of good reviews on Trip Advisor.
