The well known stops along the way are Hue, Hoi An (via Danag), and Nha Trang. Bear in mind the standards of the trains are basic compared to what you might be use to.

That is an extremely long and boring journey by rail in Vietnam. You would enjoy it more if you combined air and rail travel for the trip from Hanoi to Saigon.

Colin, unless you are a real rail tragic, get a plane. The Reunification Express that goes between Hanoi and Saigon is far from comfortable or clean, by western standards. Overnight stops are usually taken care of by means of a soft/hard sleeper or as suggested by Australian Nomad. Internal flights are quite reasonable and give you the opportunity to have quicker transfers to different regions - with the availablity of a train included, if you must:-)

How much depends on which kinds of ticket you use (soft/hard sleeper, soft/hard seat...). The stop I recommend is Hoi an, Hue and Nha trang

It's a slow and booring trip for all except dedicated rail buffs regardless of class of seating/bunking etc.

You can walk faster than the train in many places.

There are far better ways of seing Vietnam.

In the past, and possibly still so, thieving has been a problem; both on the train and at nightime halts.

Best regards. Ian

We did the trip in 3 legs.

Hanoi - Danang (Hoi An)

Danang - Nha Trang

Nha Trang - Saigon

We had a wonderful time. The kids loved the train travel. Two legs were overnight, one during the day. Length about 7-10 hours depending on section.
