Tai chi lessons -Hoam Kiem Lake

Hello fellow Trip Advisors,

My husband and I will be visiting Hanoi March 9 and 10, 2012 and are interested in practicing Tai Chi by the lake.

1) Do you know of anyone that offers Tai Chi lessons?

2) Can we join in on groups that are already practicing Tai Chi?

3) What time in the morning does this normally occur?

I thank you in advance for your help.

So excited for Vietnam!

Everybody in Vietnam is very friendly. You go to Hoan Kiem lake early in the morning and talk with the leader to join. The time from 5am until 6.30am.

Thanks for the Tai Chi tip -- any further information on other places to practice tai chi?

"Talk with the leader to join" will require some Vietnamese language skills.

That's certainly true to an extent, and also the movements of Tai Chi tend to be very loosely interpreted and swing off into a sometimes bizarre world of their own, with some most extraordinary body slapping. Unlike in China, orthodox Tai Chi is probably not to be found in most public spaces, but it is possible to join an exercise group by merely miming that you would like to do so.

Early morning and early evening exercises take place in many public areas in Hanoi but most of those are not close to the general tourist area, so in the very early morning and to a much more limited extent in the evening, Hoan Kiem Lake will probably be the best place for you investigate.

You could also join in mid-evening ballroom dancing in Lenin Park and other small parks if you have the urge!

Morning around Hoan Kiem lake they do the Tai Chi: just come and join them if you can speak Vietnamese should talk to them, if not just come and join they are friendly and happy to let you join.

- You can do some Tai Chi lessons if you do the overnight on cruises in Halong bay. Such as paradise, V'sprit cruise.

- Morning around the Hoan kiem lake: start from 5 - 6:30 AM.

Happy Holiday,

Thu
