"It was bliss on the Cathay Pacific flight to London, Bangers, mash and onion gravy"
YUM - Airline food!
We will be staying at the Jasmine Hotel. Is the Cha Ca La Vong near there, and if not recommendation of vietnamese restaurant not too far away. Thanks
If you want authentic Vietnamese Northern meal, try Bún Chả Hàng Mành, at 1 Hàng Mành street in the old quarter and don't forget to order "Nem cua" it's crab spring roll and it's delicious. Enjoy!
Gariochlass, the restaurant Vicky_Ngocdiep recommends is not in the Old Quarter and is a very long way from Lo Su Street, where the Jasmine is located.
The original Cha Ca La Vong is on Cha Ca Street, which is an 8-10 minute walk from the Jasmine, provided you don't get lost. However it only serves one dish (Cha Ca: fish fried with turmeric, spring onions and dill), so if you don't like fish it's not for you.
If you click on 'Restaurants' in the left-hand column you will find reviews of lots of other places to eat.
Just got back from Hanoi last Sunday after spending 8 days there.
We found food at these 2 restaurants in the Old Quarter cheap and good. Quan An Ngon at 18 Phan Boi Chau, Hoan Kiem Dist serving authentic Viet food. The other one is Club Opera Novel at 17 Trang Tien Street, Hoan Kiem Dist which sells both Viet and Western food.
we had a splurge (usd28 for 2) on the last night at Madame Hiens, in Cam St, a few streets paralell from Au Trieu St. Although it serves local food it is run by a French couple, the food is very good and nicely presented. What we liked the best was being able to eat outside in the courtyard, there did not seem to be many options for outside dining in the Old Quarter.
Although we didn't eat there, opposite our hotel in Au Trieu St ( which is opposite St Josephs) was a Belgian restaurant, I don't remember the name right now but it is mentioned in lonely Planet. The upstairs terrace was always packed with ex-pats and the menu featured mostly European dishes .
Thank you Creaky We are late 60 and 70 so on our first night we dont want to go too far as have an early morning next day. Will do as you suggest and look up the restaurants. Have been trawling Trip Advisor for ages looking for advice and our departure date is getting closer so we are so looking forward to our trip which Mrs Ha has organised for us. Thanks again for replying.
