Good and reasonable eating places

A group of us will be in Hanoi in mid-Dec and staying at Elegence and Hanoi Paradise Hotel in the old quaters. Any comments on these 2 hotels? Please suggest some good eating places nearby that is value for money.

Any advice on shopping in Hanoi?? How much should we bargain down? Thanks.

The Elegence hotel is a very nice hotel to stay in. Rooms are clean, good size with internet in room and down at reception area. Staff are very helpful and chearful.

You will be spoilt for choice as eating places are concern. There are so many and all are very good.

Am suppprise that you need to ask the question regarding bargaining as I can see that you are from Singapore.

I generally bargain to a compromise. You got to repect that the vendor still needs to make a living and what ever prices that you agreed on, it still be cheaper than if you were to buy the same item at home. This is because am from England and prices for everything here is extortionatate.

The saving grace is that Sterling is one of he strongest currency on earth and it will go alonng way when we go to places in the Far East.

When we bought things in the Old Quarter, they didn't give us any discount. They said they had fixed prices. What we did was to say thanks, smiled and walked to other shops having the same products to check prices.

Hi Iwhing

Passed by a stall with a huge crowd spilling out onto the street on my first night in Hanoi. Joined the crowd out of curiosity and found they were serving a dessert which is similar to the chinese tong yuen, with a little bit of ginger and 2 sweet dumplings. I think the cost is 6,000 vnd which I feel is a steal as the taste is much better than anything I can find in KL.

Sorry I can't tell you the name of the street it's on as I had just arrived and was still reeling from the shock of the noise and traffic. But it should be somewhere near Little Hanoi restaurant as we were just strolling after dinner there.

As to bargaining, I'm not much good at it but still managed to get a 30% to 50% discount on some items. But I couldn't get the vendors to budge on some sandals but since I felt that the price was already good enough, I bought them anyway. As they say, if you feel comfortable with the price, go for it. And be prepared to find a similar item with a lower price 2 stalls away. Usually happens to me.

You'll be spoled for choice in Hano as far as food goes. Our higlights were:

Hanoi Garden (36 Hang Manh - right next to Honh Ngoc 1 Hotel) was great, and excellent value.

Fanny's (unless you don't like ice cream).

Bobby Chinn - OK, not cheap, but a fabulous experience - any place which offers duct tape for hyperactive children has got to be good.

Hi Beagles on holiday

ha ha... duct tape... ?? the mind bogles..

Bobby Chinns is good. Food is delicious, presentation A1, the decor of the restaurant is something to see with all the rose buds suspended from the ceiling. A bit expensive by Vn standards.

We got Elegance 2 to book us a table while staying there.

Cheers Heather
