Hi Nicolly,

On my point, normally It takes you two nights on train so that it is difficult for you to have three days and 2 nights. I suggest you a program and you can deside your self.

Night 1( Friday): take train to Lao Cai from Hanoi at night. You stay overnight on train.

Day 1: (Saturday) You arrive Lao Cai railway station and then dive to Can Cau Market and stay overnight in Homestay.

Day 2: (Sunday) You drive to Bac Ha to visit Bac Ha Market and then overnight in BacHa - or you can drive to Lao Cai to take train to Hanoi.

For, the program takes you at least 2 days 3 nights to visit market in Sapa.

- Saturday: Can Cau market located on the other valley of Sapa. To reach the market, we follow a spectacular road with beautiful scenery. This market is weekly meeting point of Flower H/Mong, Fula, Black H’Mong. This is one the most authentic markets in the region After the market, we will visit some villages near before returning slowly to Lao Cai.

- Sunday: Muong Khuong or Bac Ha markets - the busiest market of the region where you will meet the H’Mongs, Fula, Dzao and other ethnic minorities to come and exchange not only the goods but the news of their own community.

Rail tickets to Lao Cai (for Sa Pa, etc) require booking 2-days ahead of travel. This is best done after you have booked you Ha Long Bay cruise and set to depart for the night you return from HLB.

Do not be surprised if they will only sell you a one way ticket, this is to avoid no-shows on the return journey and they can be purchased in Sa Pa or Lao Cai.

There is NO need for a tour as it is best to get guides in Sa Pa (see below) as you can see if you are compatible with them and you understand them clearly. Many guides are very competent young women with good upper body strength.

Transportation to Bac Ha, etc. can be done from Sa Pa or Lao Cai using either private or bus transportation.

REMEMBER, Friday and Saturday nights are high priced because of the crowds in the towns.

AVOID QUEEN HOTEL (Sa Pa) as the string of baggage thefts continues. Mountain View is also blacklisted by some because of poor services.

Some guides are SO or TUNG (a Black H'Mong) located through Sa Pa Goldsea Hotel, < sapagoldsea@hn.vnn.vn >, 58 Fanxipan Road, Tel: 84-(0)-20-872-180 / 84-(0)-20-871-869. E-m:sapagoldsea@hn.vnn.vn.

Villages worth visiting are Cat Cat, GiangTaChai, TaPhin, YLinhHo, HauThao, SuPan (easily the most beautiful village in Sapa area).

Another excellent guide is "Thanh-Sa Pa" < longsapa@gmail.com >, guiding for over 6 years and has good English. An enterprising guy, he has a tour that includes night 1 in Tavan, Dzay People, night 2 in Seo Trung Ho, Red Dzao, night 3 Ban Ho, Tay People, night 4,5 in Sa Pa, day 6 is for the Montagnard market.

At the Mountain View Hotel there is a Mrs. Hong there who runs a guide service. Many of them are female and young but are very experienced in showing visitors around. For Mount PhanXiPan climbers she has a man named Chang - he is strong enough to assist the weary climbers. Always ask for the long route to the top - the short one is too steep.

But on ALL accounts avoid guides from the Victoria! (expensive - and the Victoria Hotel itself - aging).

Note: You MUST employ a guide if you climb Mount FanSiPan as ONLY they can obtain the required climbing permit from the police. Do NOT worry if the guide appears young, or female, as they all have excellent guiding skills and are likely stronger than you!

And ALL your money helps the locals rather than enriching some cowboy in Ha Noi.

There is regular Sunday bus to Bac Ha from Sa Pa but you can get there by local bus from Lao Cai. There are over 600 hotel rooms of all types in Bac Ha - just make sure you are not too near a street loudspeaker as the chair of the Lao Cai Peoples Committee believes in only setting the volume at high!

Remember Friday and Saturday rates for hotels, etc are higher than the rest of the week. Book your rail reservation at least two days ahead at 120 La Duane - and avoid Ha Noi agent markups and the chance of a different class of service.
