Degenerative Back Disease. Require oxycontin. Expensive.

I am going to ho chi minh partly on vacation and partly to stockpile and save money for medication. I would like to know if it's true you can purchase oxycontin without a prescription from a dr there. Or can one get a doctor while there? Carry with me my MRI and doctors recommendation for presribe and dosing. I currently pay $4 each where I live. It is an expensive, but only thing I can use for my chronic pain. Is it possible to purchse this drug in Vietnam if so, where? do they speak English?

Pretty easy to get pharmaceutics over the counter that would be prescription only in other places. Be aware of fakes and how they store it in the drugstore. Also pay attention to 'best before' dates.

Find the largest drugstore in town. Chances are good that they actually employ people with an appropriate education, the small ones usually don't. Risk of fakes might also be smaller, but that's guesswork in my part.

It doesn't matter if they speak English. Consult drugs.com or similar sites to find other names for your brand. Chances are good that they will have something.

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor. I have the greatest respect for and the greatest fear of the medical profession.

I can't say for sure, but I think you might well be able to buy it from any well-stocked pharmacy.

I too have a degenerative disease and can buy the medications I need very easily over the counter in Vietnam. Unlike OxyContin, however, my medications have no opioid content, but it is easy to purchase analgesics that contain codeine so the same might apply to OxyContin.

As it's an imported product with a high import tax, though, it might be none too cheap. There will probably be generic oxycodone tablets on sale, but counterfeit drugs abound in Vietnam so it's important to buy from a thoroughly reputable pharmacy.

The word "stockpile" raises a red flag for me, especially if I had stockpiled and transported these drugs back to the U.S. for consumption over the next few months. I would certainly make sure I had all my paperwork together, written by a doctor in the language of my country, along with dosage, quantity of pills prescribed, etc. A larger quantity of drugs than considered necessary might be considered trafficking here. If you're consuming them in Vietnam, that would be a different situation. Also, it is my experience that Vietnamese pharmacists dispense drugs without a doctor's prescription. You simply tell them what your problem is, tell them what you've been taking, pay your money and get your meds. No paperwork and not good for traveling across international borders.

I too sympathize with your situation but would hate to see a fellow traveller end up in jail for carrying what authorities might consider an illegal quantity. Good luck and Happy travels,

Richard

Ah Richard, I missed the word 'stockpile'. That throws a very different complexion on things.

If Ryan does indeed live in Singapore it would be very unwise to try to carry even one packet of opioid-containing drugs into the country without the required documentation as the authorities are very strict there. Attempting to take in a large quantity would be sheer lunacy.

Creaking,

Yes, I believe Singapore is extremely severe with whatever they consider illegal importation of drugs. Regards.

I agree with RichardG and Creaking. My husband uses Oxycontin, 90mg daily , (which is a strictly controlled drug in the UK.) for back problems ,but he always ensures that he keeps them in the original box, takes a copy of the prescription from his General Practioner , and a copy from his Pain Management Consultant. We travel thousands of miles each year but only at Hong Kong airport has he been questioned.

Also be aware that there are lots of Chinese fake drugs in some countries, particularly Cambodia, I am told.

In the US, Oxycontin is known as 'poor man's heroin' , so taking a 'stockpile' across some borders may ring alarm bells. I have always had the impression that Singapore is a strict country.

Best of luck with your future back op.
