First Time in Vietnam (and Cambodia)

We are 50yo couple, travelling to Vietnam and Cambodia for the first time For the first week we will be travelling Cambodia with another couple, then for the rest of the time, just the two of us. We would love help or comments on our initial itinerary.

Day 1 – Fly to HCMC from Australia – arrive late afternoon. Overnight HCMC

Day 2- Visit museum and Cu Chi tunnels (Overnight HCMC)

Day 3 - Taxi to somewhere and catch a 2 night cruise up the Mekong. (Overnight Boat)

Do all boats leave from the same place ? are taxi’s big enough for 4 people and luggage ? Suggestions for which boat appreciated.

Day 4 - En route to Phnom Penh (Overnight Boat or Phnom Penh land based)

Day 5 - Explore Phnom Penh - (Overnight Phnom Penh)

(is one full day enough)

Day 6 - Travel to Siem Reap - transport ? (Overnight Siem Reap)

Day 7 - Explore Angkor - (Overnight Siem Reap)

(Is one full day enough ?)

During the rest of the time we have, we know we would like to visit Hoi An, Hue, Hanoi and Halong Bay. We would like to scuba dive somewhere – suggestions where? We are keen to enjoy the coast line between Hoi An and Hue. Are bikes an option with luggage (or only day trips)? We definitely want to allow time for a 2 night Halong Bay cruise. Not keen on visiting Sapa this time around. Have been told Nha Trang might be too young for us. We’re just a little unsure of how to structure the rest of the trip.

Day 8 - Travel to Hoi An (fly to Danang then taxi ?)

with this itinerary you will need a multiple entry visa. You should visit Vietnam then Siem Reap. Here are my two suggestions:

HCMC-Mekong Delta - Siem Reap - Hanoi -Halong - Hanoi - Hue - Hoi An - Nha Trang - HCMC fly out.

HCMC - Mekong Delta - Nha Trang - Hoi An - Hue- Hanoi - Halong _ Hanoi - Siem Reap fly out.

Nha Trang is ideal for scuba diving

Siem Reap takes at least 2 days. 1 day is not enough. With Hoi An you will fly to Da NAng then taxi to Hoi An (15 USD). Hue can be reached by night train from Hanoi or bus/car from Hoi An.

"Do all boats leave from the same place ? are taxi’s big enough for 4 people and luggage ? Suggestions for which boat appreciated". ==> No, boats in Mekong Delta have different itineraries. You should call taxi with 6 seats.

With 21 days, you should fly Phnompenh - Siem Reap to save time.

I suggest staying in SR an extra couple of nights and transferring to VN on day 10.

giving you 12 nights for Hanoi, Halong, Hue and Hoi An.

Scuba diving is not in my area of expertise so can't help with that one.

Definitely would allow 2 full days in Siem Reap. Also would allow for 2 days in PP. You will go to Tuol Sleng I imagine and you will need to have down time after that to reflect...even if you dont visit the "killing fields"

Yes Nha Trang is a bit of a scene. Doc Let (one hour north by car) is a very quiet and somewhat isolated beach which we enjoyed. Hang out in Hanoi too...loads to explore and do...the longer you stay the better it gets...great restaurants. And Halong bay is everything you will have read.

Siem Reap/Angkor is a Region - Not a destination.

Just to scratch the surface and enjoy yourself requires a minium of three full clear days and five is better.

Best regards. Ian
